  2. Rationale Transferring what we read into visual form often helps us to see what is happening. Using the following system, we will represent our current piece of literature on the graph.

  4. Step 1 Using a separate sheet of paper, make a list of ten major events in the story in chronological order.

  5. Example: To Kill a Mockingbird • Scout and Jem meet Dill • Scout gets in trouble at school • Jem and Scout discover prizes in the knothole • Jem’s pants are mysteriously fixed • Miss Maudie’s house burns down

  6. Example: To Kill a Mockingbird 6. Scout breaks up the mob at the jail 7. Atticus defends Tom Robinson at the trial 8. Tom Robinson is found guilty 9. Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout 10. Boo Radley saves Jem and Scout and kills Bob Ewell

  7. Step 2 Assign a value to each event, anywhere from +5 to -5. +5 = very positive value (in action, condition, mood, etc.) -5 = very negative value (in action, condition, mood, etc.)

  8. Example: To Kill a Mockingbird • Scout and Jem meet Dill (+2) • Scout gets in trouble at school (-1) • Jem and Scout discover prizes in the knothole (+2) • Jem’s pants are mysteriously fixed (+3) • Miss Maudie’s house burns down (neutral)

  9. 6. Scout breaks up the mob at the jail (+4) 7. Atticus defends Tom Robinson at the trial (+5) 8. Tom Robinson is found guilty (-5) 9. Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout (-4) 10. Boo Radley saves Jem & Scout & kills Bob Ewell (+5)

  10. Step 3 Graph your events on the chart. Connect the dots to show the pattern more clearly.
