Recruiting for Preschool Programs • Published recruitment information in the following publications: Modesto Bee, El Sol, CV Drum and Central Valley Voice. • Disseminated public service announcements to the following TV and Radio stations: TV-- Channel 3, 10, 13, 19, and Central Valley Report; Radio—Citadel, Clear Channel, Silverado, Entravision and KPRS. • Preschool expansion from 05-06 was 144 students. This information was based on parent information gathered from the application for child development service.

  4. AVID Recruitment • Met with “feeder” junior high principals to brainstorm strategies for recruiting more minority students to the AVIDprogram. Have identified students at Prescott junior high. • All classes were given the“Save me a Spot in College” scholarship contest information. • Increased the numberof presentationstoAVID classes about the importance of college. • Developed MCS AVID brochure. • Increased AVID sections from 05/06 (19) to 06/07 (27) and 07/08 to (33) .

  9. College Admissions • 88 Students attended the Historically Black College Fair at Franklin High School, September 16, 2006. • 58 students attended the Sacramento State Univ. M.E.Ch.A Education Conference, November 7, 2006. • The 3rd Annual Historically Black College and Hispanic Serving University College Fair was held at Davis High, February 7 , 2007. Over 700 students attended this event. • The 19th Annual African American Education Conference was held at MJC, February 24, 2007. MCS is a co-sponsor. Over 200 students attended from MCS. • The 23rd Annual Hispanic Education Conference was held at MJC, March 24, 2007. MCS is a co-sponsor. Over 1200 students attended this event. • Established a partnership with College Campaign, for the “Save me a Spot in College”. • Historically Black College Tour June 17-22. Twenty parents attended the informational meeting on February 5, 2007. Eight students signed up to go on the tour.

  10. Attendance Intervention • Hired full-time bilingual Attendance Liaison to work with students at “high risk” of non-attendance. • Engaged in county-wide effort to increase attendance using public service announcements and advertisements on popular radio stations and movie theaters.

  11. Conduct Code Orientation • All 7th and 9th grade students were provided with a detailed review of the Student Conduct Code at the beginning of the school year and all new transfer students were given a full conduct code review monthly. • A verification form will be submitted by site principals to verify completion.

Parent Education/Training • Effective Black Parenting Program: 19 parents graduated December 6, 2006. • Next class started February 1, 2007. 22 parents graduated from this class on March 22, 2007. • Parent Institute graduated 436 parents in the 2006/07 year from 8 schools. • Parent Institute will increase from 13 schools to 16 schools in the 2007/08 school year. • Recruitment of parents for the March CACE (California Association of Compensatory Education) conference is complete. MCS sent 39 parent and 6 staff. • Parents as Teachers program (PAT) was conducted at Burbank and Shakleford by El Concilio. Focus was on mental health and parent involvement with monolingual, non-medi-cal eligible families.

  14. Diversity Training • Staff Training August 24, 2006: • Working with Diversity Task Force to identify a cultural competency program that can be used district-wide. • Presentation done by Equal Justice Society and California Teachers Association on the Unconscious Bias Project, a cultural competency initiative. • Parker Committee and MCS Diversity Task Force continues to meet monthly. • Attended National Association of Multicultural Education conference. Provided material for Diversity Force to review. • Dr. Chance Lewis provided diversity training for Fairview staff and had a lunch discussion with several elementary principals. • Action plans for “Addressing the Achievement Gap” have been submitted by each school site.

  16. Home Suspensions • Female suspensions are up during the same period last year. Suspensions for 05/06 were 2,409 compared to 2,520 for 06/07. This is a 4.6% increase over last year. • African American (224 current 06/07) female suspension have decreased 2.18% compared to 05/06 (229). Hispanic (1,482 current 06/07) female suspension has increased 18.18% compared to 05/06 (1,254). • Overall male suspensions are down during the same time period last year. Suspensions for 05/06 were 7,032 compared to 6,863 for 06/07. This is a 2.46% decrease. • African American male (820- 06/07) (790-50/06) represents a 3.8% increase over the previous school year and Hispanic male (3,708-06/07) (3,580) represents a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year. • Suspensions are based on the period from the beginning of the school year to June 12 of this year.

  17. Expulsion Summary • There is a .0063% decrease in expulsions from the 05/06 (158) school year to the 06/07 (157) school year. • There was a .1538% decrease in African American males during 05/06 (13) to 11 for the current school year 06/07. • There was a 50% increase in Hispanic male expulsions from 05/06 (42) to 63 for the current school year 06/07. • There was no increase or decrease in African American females. The number of expulsions (3) is the same as the same period last year 05/06 (also 3). • There is an 92% increase in the number of Hispanic female expulsions from 13 in 05/06 to 25 in the current 06/07 school year.

  18. New Projects Completed • Soroptimist - Program to address the needs of at risk junior high girls was held March 3, 2007 at Modesto Junior College. MCS provided buses and helped coordinate event. 130 girls attended this event. • MJC Passport to college initiative to work with 3 pilot elementary schools to increase the likelihood of going to college among minority students. Fifth grade students would be guaranteed admission and scholarships, based on meeting set requirements. Orville Wright, Fairview and Franklin have agreed to participate. • UC Santa Cruz trip - Visit project that targets increasing African American males on campus. 25-30 male students attended field trip on April 20, 2007.

  19. Additional Projects • Challenge Day at Johansen on October 7, 2006, (multi-school, 98 students, 25 staff/community members). • Diverstity Conference speaker, Jerry Tello, at Hanshaw Middle School, October 27,2006 (entire school, staff and students in attendance). • Community Gang Awareness Presentation with Señor Chocolaté, aka Richard Santana at Hanshaw Middle School, May 3, 2007 (500+ attendees). • UC Merced Fieldtrip, “The Shaping of American Biographies of Two Hispanics” presentation and college tour (25 Downey students). • Voices from the Earth Production (A History of Cesar Chavez & Farm Workers Movement) at Downey (400+ students).
