  1. Living within the Planetary Limits Dipankar Sanyal CEO, TERI-BCSD

  2. What threatens the planet’s sustainability? Destruction of bio-diversity; land, air and marine Burgeoning population Overdrawing on Earth’s natural recharge capabilities Increasing Demand and exploitation of resources

  3. What does that mean for us ? Earth is gradually spinning Hotter.. Leading to… Global Warming Natural Calamities Climate Change Issues of Energy, Water and Food security Since it is happening slowly, and all projections are in the future, sense of urgency is missing in general public and political leadership. We are reaching a critical point of no-return, unless WE ACT NOW..

  4. Pulp and Paper industry – how it impacts the Environment

  5. Indian Pulp and Paper Industry • Revenue : Rs 35,000 Crores and growing… • Employment Generated : approx. 600,000 direct employed and more than double in indirect employment • Ancillary Industry : Supports Printing industry of Rs 70,000 Crores with 1.1 million direct employments, export revenue over USD 600 million. • Targets to be Rs 120,000 Crores by 2015 • Industry:850 Pulp and Paper Mills • 14 are wood exclusive, 836 use agro and waste as input • Major issues • Over 50% production needs forest and agri-fibre • Chemical waste processing and disposal • Waste Imports • Power • Water

  6. Would digital economy reduce paper use? • Will Americans & Europeans reduce their 200 kgs per year consumption ?? • Trivia : Americans recently rejected digital form of their half yearly Social Security statement – for 250 million people ! • And in India, we still print Form 16A. • While paper produces 8% of global emissions, IT produces 2.7%. • Increasing demand from developing countries would offset any reduction achieved by the digital revolution by a factor of magnitude. • Can civilization survive • without paper and paper products?

  7. What’s the way forward? • Let’s learn from experiences of the industry • Addressing the input sourcing, more from indigenous recycling and other wastes • Reduced energy usage, thereby reducing GHG emissions • Reduction of harmful chemicals by process change • Recycle waste water to reduce demand on fresh water input • Encourage Local input sourcing • Collaboration • With increasing cost pressure and competitiveness in the market place, all are not able to undertake such initiatives

  8. What’s the way forward? • Need for research • Waste of other fibers as input • Process innovation • Higher eco-efficiency in the product life cycle • Printing technology to use eco-friendly ink and colouring agents • Need for awareness creation • Less than 30% of paper waste is recycled back, how can we increase it to say 70%. • Recycling reduces energy and water usage significantly. Our offices and homes must participate for effective recycling. • Regulators to understand the critical nature of the industries

  9. Thank You
