  1. The Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki

  2. Was the last major event of WWII • General Groves & Admiral Purnell Were the two American military figures who had made the decision to drop both bombs within days of each other, believing that it would force the Japanese to surrender • Scientists had confrontations on which type of atomic bomb would be most effective: An uranium or a plutonium • Scientists used a plutonium atomic bomb on Hiroshima, but still tested the uranium atomic bomb on Nagasaki • For using the atomic bomb, Nagasaki was not a primary target. • Nagasaki was a shipbuilding city and a large military port • Nagasaki was separated into many parts by water • Bockscar was the bomber that dropped the atomic uranium bomb on Nagasaki(Enola Gay bombed Hiroshima)

  3. Both the bombers of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were B29 Superfortress bombers • Boscar had left for Kokura on August 9th from Tinian Island but the weather was not on the Americans side and, low on fuel, they were forced to go to their only other target, Nagasaki • When Bockscar was about to takeoff, flight commander, Major Sweeney, found that one of the fuel pumps wasn’t working • With one of the fuel pumps not working, the Bockscar had to carry an extra 800 gallons of fuel, not being able to use it. • The atomic bomb that Boscar had carried was named Fat Man • Fat Man was not the same type of atomic bomb as Little Boy; Little Boy was a Fire-propelled bomb whereas Fat Man was a drop-bomb

  4. Fat Man contained 64 detonators which would drive pieces of plutonium into a superficial mass • Little Man had used 235 detonators which did the same but instead used uranium • Fat Man weighed 10,000 lbs and was 10 ft. 8 in. long • Held the capacity for 20,000 high explosives • Due to weather conditions, Radar had to be used to drop the bomb on Nagasaki • Nagasaki had been targeted in the past many times before but never fired upon. So when the air siren was sounded for the dropping of an atomic bomb, no one listened. • Ironically, bomb shelters had been built for situations like these and perfectly could’ve protected most of the city’s population if the people had listened
