After Columbus’ voyage, Britain, France and the Dutch wanted to explore but the route was blocked. Giovanni Caboto found Newfoundland when he explored on the British’ dollar. He found cod, and met the Beothuk and the Mikmaq
The past events affect the present ones. In 1497, Caboto was given reign to “conquer, occupy and possess lands” that he found. He claimed this land for the English. When an empire tries to dominate other lands and people, this is called imperialism.
After 1400’s, the Mikmaq were in constant contact with the Europeans and would trade for metal goods. In return, they would provide furs, fish and old clothes.
The Beothuk lived in Newfoundland but unlike the Mikmaq, they did not develop friendly relations with the Europeans. One reason was because French and British explorers took over their existing fishing settlements.

The Beothuk took equipment from the British and French to try and encourage them to leave. 1713- Newfoundland officially became a British colony which caused more people (British settlers) to move over. Any conflicts that occurred with the Beothuks, the Europeans would shoot them on sight. Some of the Beothuk were actually hunted and they became extinct. Other factors that contributed to their extinction were loss of food supply and European diseases.
The Beothuk avoided contact with the Europeans initially (possibly Vikings). The Europeans captured many Beothuk and they did not like it. The last Beothukwas Shawnadithit(1823 captured) and met William Cormack in 1828. He recorded history of the Beothuk before she died of tuberculosis
Jacques Cartier- He was a French explorer that was sponsored by the King of France to find a passage to Asia through North America to find gold and resources and to discover islands. Known as the Northwest passage (up through the Baffin Islands) He ended up in the Hudson’s Bay and Quebec.
