How coaches lead from behind . . . • Client (staff) does the “heavy lifting” • Client takes the lead • Coach asks questions • Coach doesn’t rush in to “solve” the problem • Pace determined by client • Coach shares his/her story judiciously • Coach wears multiple hats: consultant, expert, mentor (know when to give advice & when to resist)

  10. Planning for Change • What is your goal? • How will you know when you have reached your goal? • What will allow you to sustain the goal? • What are the gains and risks for you? For others? • What do you have to give up to get what you want? • What actions will get you to where you want to go? • Which options are best for this situation? • What strengths can you leverage? • What obstacles lie in your way? • How would you rate this goal’s appeal to you? To others? • On a scale of one to ten, how realistic is this route? • What difficulties are you experiencing in committing to this goal? • What do you want this situation to look like a year from now?
