  2. Childhood Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin on Feb. 12, 1809 in what is now Hodgenville, Kentucky. His mother died when he was nine but he was very close to his stepmother who urged him to read. Lincoln himself stated that he had about one year of formal education.

  3. Adulthood In September 1836 Lincoln began practicing law and played an important part in having the Illinois state capital moved from Vandalia to Springfield. In 1846 Lincoln was elected to the U.S. Congress. During these years Lincoln had become engaged to Mary Todd (1818–1882), a cultured and well-educated Kentucky woman. They were married on November 2, 1842.

  4. Presidency In 1860 the Republican National Convention met and chose Lincoln as their candidate for president of the United States. After Lincoln's election victory, parts of the country reacted harshly against the new president's stand on slavery. Seven Southern states then seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. In his inaugural address he clarified his position on the national situation. Secession, he said, was wrong, and the Union could not legally be broken apart.By now there was no avoiding the outbreak of the Civil War.

  5. Civil War • After Lincoln attempted to reinforce Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, Confederate forces opened fire and the Civil War began. • While Lincoln insisted that the Civil War was being fought to preserve the Union, the fate of slavery also played a major role. • On January 1, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. • Confederate resistance ended after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

  6. Assassination Lincoln's victory in that election thus changed the racial future of the United States. It also agitated Southern-sympathizer and Negrophobe John Wilkes Booth, who began to conspire first to abduct Lincoln and later to kill him. On Apr. 14, 1865, five days after Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Lincoln attended a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre in Washington. There Booth entered the presidential box and shot Lincoln. The next morning at 7:22 Lincoln died.
