  2. Johannes E. Purkinjé was proud of his Czech heritage. In 1823 while Professor of Physiology at Breslau, Germany he examined the inside of a human and dog eye using a candle as a light source and a concave spherical lens to look at the fundus. Although he tried to popularize the technique, as usual he was years ahead of his time, and few were able to see the importance of his demonstration.
