  1. Engaging Students Using Technology in a Large Classroom Elliott Currie, Department of Business, U of G 24th Annual Teaching & Learning Innovations Conference University of Guelph May 11, 2011

  2. Agenda • Background, • Issues • Opportunities • New Issues • Let’s Try A Solution • Is it working? • Where to from here

  3. Background • Large Classes, • >300 and >500 • Introductory Management Accounting • >100 Intermediate Management Accounting • 100 Taxation Fall 2011, 52 Fall 2010 • Majority take Intro Management Accounting because they have too • Material can be technical and procedural, especially TAXATION, no overall logic • 5 step learning process

  4. Issues • Lack of interaction, no engagement • English as a second language • Comprehension of terminology • Comprehension of Professor • Numbers make Office Hours unmanageable • Absenteeism

  5. Opportunities • Camtesia Video, • Captures the computer during class • PPT slides, • Voice from microphone • Tablet, hand written solutions, with comments • Posted to Website and • Viewable by students, whenever, as many times as they wish • winter 2230

  6. New Issues • I am caught if I said anything????!!!! They actually hear my jokes • Students can review when they want • Potentially technical problems • They do not come to class and get delayed announcements • They do not do the work till the last minute • Then they ask for help • It is great in Tax, they love it, complicated • Also used in DE version, nice human touch • Overall positive response

  7. Let’s Try A New Solution • How do we engage them in class • Get them to class? • They may even learn if they come to class • MonocleCAT https://www.tophatmonocle.com/login • Uses Texting, or Email they have one of these • One student per term so far, 527 fall and 440 winter, did not

  8. Is It Working? • Attendance was declining to 30% with just Camtesia • Now 60-70% • Higher with advanced courses • Students in course evaluations say they like it • Marks…Same exams Fall to Fall and Winter to Winter

  9. Results, Marks Wise 2230

  10. Where to from Here • Exams messy results • Changing program, quantitative students moving to the fall term • Same Lyryx problems all 4 semesters • MC worth 10% of grade, 50% attendance in fall 10, 60% attendance in winter 11 • Need to do it, get the students engaged • Need the buzz in class, • They surf then bring them back • Can correct as we go • Does require slowing down

  11. Conclusion • We need to engage • They will likely learn better and more if they come to class and are active • Use familiar technology to the students • Small cost to all parties • Large potential to increase performance

  12. Thank You for Listening and Participating Any Questions
