  2. People that went to the United States • They immigrated to the United States from different countries • They traveled across the ocean for weeks • Their first step onto American soil was on ELLIS ISLAND

  3. E L L I S I S L A N D • The first place many immigrants visited • A processing station to determine if immigrants were able to survive in the United States • The gateway to the United States

HISTORY OF ELLIS ISLAND • Opened on January 1, 1892 • 1st Immigrant - 15 year old Irish girl called Annie Moore on 1st January 1892 • Last immigrant – Norwegian Seaman called Arne Peterssen in 1954 • Named after Samuel Ellis, a New York developer who bought it in 1782 – sold to New York in 1808

History continued The peak years were from 1892-1924 • In 1907, more than 11,000 immigrants were processed in one day • By 1924 over 16 million immigrants had entered the United States The gates closed in 1954 • Over 40 million immigrants had passed through its gates • Opened as a museum in September 1990

  6. What is an Immigrant? • A person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another • To escape hardship to include religious and political persecution • War • Starvation • Poverty • Lack of opportunity

  7. Where did Immigrants come from? • Britain • Germany • Sweden • Italy • Poland • Russia • Ireland • Austria-Hungary

  8. Steps to Coming to America • Immigrants sold most of their possession to pay for passage and papers needed to immigrate to America • Left behind family and many belongings • Can only bring one luggage on the ship

  9. V o y a g e t o A m e r i c a • Time: 3 wks. to 1 month • Distance: 3,000 miles • Food: Thin soup and bread • Preferred the main deck for fresh air • Many were ill • No room to do anything

  10. Arriving at Ellis Island • Site of the Statue of Liberty was America • Many immigrants were nervous about whether they would pass the tests at Ellis Island

  11. A Day at Ellis Island • Baggage Area • Stairs of Separation • Medical Examination • Cafeteria • Great Hall • Dormitory (if detained) • Kissing Post

  12. Baggage Area • Here they checked in their heaviest baggage • They were separated from their families • Did not know if they would ever see their family or luggage's again

  13. S t a i r s o f S e p a r a t i o n • As immigrants walked up the staircase, United States Public Health physicians watched them for signs of illnesses.

M e d i c a l E x a m s • Physicians looked for signs of infectious diseases like diphtheria or whooping cough • Also looked for signs of insanity or other conditions that would prevent them from earning a living in the United States. • If there was a medical problem, a chalk mark was placed on the back in need for further examination • “E” - Eye problems • “H” - Heart problems • “L” - Lameness • “SC” - Scalp problems • “X” - Mental disease

  15. T h e C a f e t e r i a • Immigrants were fed after the medical examination • Their first taste of American food • Food, such as Ice cream was new and strange

  16. T h e G r e a t H a l l • Also known as the Registry Room • Where millions of immigrants were processed for admission to the United States • They waited for hours to have an interview with an inspector

Questions asked by the Inspector • Have you ever been in jail? • Have you ever been divorced? • Have you ever been sick? • Have you ever been a communist? • Asked to count backwards from 20 and add numbers • Asked to place pegs in the right shaped holes • Would you wash stairs from the top down or bottom up?

  18. D o r m i t o r y • Immigrants who were detained for medical or other reasons stayed in these rooms • They stay was only a day or two but difficult cases stayed for weeks • Reasons for stay: • In need of a ticket money • A sponsor or a relative’s arrival • An illness

  19. T h e K i s s i n g P o s t • After immigrants were approved for admission to the United States, they walked down the staircase to meet the parents, children, or spouses they had been separated from • This is called the “kissing post” because of the many happy reunions that take place here.
