  1. European Exploration Isabel and Luke 1300- 1750 AD

African Exploration • Portugal was the first to really explore Africa in the 1400’s, followed by the English, Spanish, Dutch, French, and Danish in the 1500’s • Allowed Europe to start the African slave trade in Africa with the help of David Livingstone • Explorers • Park • Rebmann • Livingstone • Burton

American Exploration • First explored by Columbus who was in search of the Northwest Passage • Soon, others came to annex some of eastern America and the Caribbean • Soon the French, Dutch Portuguese, and English were interested • Eventually these nations succeeded in colonizing North America • As more countries became interested, colonists started to face threats from other colonies, Indian tribes and pirates • Explorers • Columbus • Cabot • Cartier • De Coronado • Champlain • Hudson • Drake • Mackenzie

Latin American Exploration • Explorers • De Balboa • Cortes • Magellan • Drake • The Incas, Mayas, and the Aztecs were empires there • Spanish colonized western Latin America in search of gold, and Portugal colonized the eastern portion (brazil) • Conquistadors like Cortes came, they would depend on their military and guns to take over the indigenous people and leaders • Europe believed themselves to be superior because they had developed steel and immunities while Latin America hadn’t.

  5. Caribbean Exploration • Explorers • Ponce De Leon • Champlain • Columbus • Columbus first discovered the islands in the 1400’s • The British exploited the islands for sugar crops • Opened up for more trade, including the slave trade

Christopher Columbus • 1451-1506 • Born in Genoa, Italy, but he sailed under Spain for his voyage in 1492 • Originally wanted to get spices from the Indies on his voyage to the Americas • Brought back Native Americans, which he mistakenly called Indians, to Europe. • Also sailed to the Caribbean

  7. John Cabot • 1451-1498? • Born in Genoa, Italy (the same place and year as Columbus) • Sailed to and mapped Newfoundland • In 1498, he left for another trip, but he was never seen again

  8. Vasco Nunez De Balboa • 1475?-1519 • Born in Spain • Sailed to Columbia in 1500 in search of gold • Went on an expedition to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, killing thousands of Natives • Was arrested and beheaded for treason in 1519, though innocent

  9. Herando Cortes • 1485-1547 • Conquered Mexico and the Aztecs as a conquistador • Claimed Mexico for Spain in 1521 • Sent gold and jewels back to Spain after the Aztecs paid him a ransom • Founded Veracruz in 1519

  10. Ferdinand Magellan • 1480?-1521 • Was Portuguese but sailed for Spain • Sailed down to what is now South America, and to the Philippines • Was killed there, but another someone else took over and sailed back to Spain. This was the first ship to sail around the world

  11. Jacques Cartier • 1491-1557 • Was born in France • Discovered the Saint Lawrence River in 1534 • Searched for the Northwest Passage • Claimed Canada for France

  12. Francisco Vasques de Coronado • 1510-1554 • Was Spanish, became the Gov. of New Galicai in Mexico • Was the first to explore the American Southwest

  13. Samuel de Champlain • 1567-1635 • Led 12 expeditions in his lifetime • Founded many cities in Canada, including Quebec • Also founded Lake Champlain and some of the Great Lakes

  14. Henry Hudson • 1570?- 1611 • English explorer, but sailed for the Dutch • Founded the Hudson River and Bay • His crew became mutinous, and he was never seen again

  15. Sir Francis Drake • 1540-1596 • Pirate turned explorer • Had the second ship to go around the world • Sailed around the world stopping at Peru and Chile to trade with the Spanish to get gold

  16. Sir Alexander Makenzie • 1764- 1820 • Scottish explorer and fur trapper • Explored Canada • Was the first to reach the Pacific Ocean by crossing North America

  17. Juan Ponce De Leon • 1474- 1521 • Spanish explorer, sailed with Columbus • Found Puerto Rico, other Caribbean islands and claimed Florida for Spain

  18. Why? • The reason for the European Expansion was mainly to find the northwest passage, as well as to expand their empires by creating colonies

  19. Effect on Modern Culture • This time Period had a large effect on modern culture. It allowed much of Europe to grow ascountries, build an empire, and explore new lands. Without the European colonization, the United States, Africa, and much of South and Central America would not exist or be as well off as we are now.
