The Academy @ University of Ulster • The Academy for Irish Cultural Heritages (AICH) is one of five Research Institutes based in the University of Ulster’s Faculty of Arts. • 30+ staff from a wide range of subject backgrounds in the arts, humanities and social sciences, • 3 University’s campuses. • Associate members, and a large and growing postgraduate community.

Interdisciplinary CulturalHeritages International Ireland The Academy - Aim To be a centre of excellence for interdisciplinary research on cultural heritages, both material and non-material, in an international context with particular emphasis on cultural heritages connected with the island of Ireland.

SIEF2008:: About SIEF • SIEF, the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore, was founded in Athens on September 8th, 1964 • 9th SIEF : encourage boundary-crossing explorations: Transcending “European Heritages”: Liberating the Ethnological Imagination • Broad range of sub-themes, panel discussions, posters, workshops, and keynotes by leading international scholars.

SIEF2008:: SIEF & The City, Synergies • Involve the City in the event(both City Side & Waterside) • Use venues around the City for both the academic and social programme • Liase with key stakeholders on both local and crossborder level • Local Authorities • Tourism offices • Local Business • Arts & Entertainment Venues City Side Waterside Walled City

Lives, facts and stories of people who left their countries to live their cultures in Northern Ireland… and vice versa • A series of research Symposia organised by the Academy • Four events over a two-year period (Nov'06–May'08) • Focus: both the established and the emerging European cultural landscapes in today’s N.I.

  11. NorthBound:: Who is it About? • Each symposium will look into a specific European community in Northern Ireland including: • Italy[17 Nov 06] • The Baltic Regions[May 07] • France & Germany[Nov 07] • The Balkans[May 08]

  12. NorthBound:: Whatis For [Aim] To promote the culture, support the presence & provide networking opportunities to people & communities who, from Europe, have come to Northern Ireland to live, work & study.

NorthBound:: Whatis For [Obj] • Increase visibility and awarenessof the activities carried out by such communities within N.I, R.O.I and their respective countries • Strengthen the cultural links between N.I. and their respective countries • Facilitate the creation of networks that can support cultural, social and economic activities between N.I., R.O.I and their respective countries
