Explore the environmental impact and ethical considerations in the development of a low-cost aerial drone equipped with real-time data relay capabilities, high-res imaging, and non-volatile memory storage. Addressed issues include PCB manufacturing, sensor production, battery usage, foam recycling, and ethical concerns like privacy invasion and injury prevention. Testing protocols ensure software integrity, mechanical reliability, and flight stability in favorable conditions.

Project Overview • Portable low-cost aerial drone that can be used for reconnaissance • Relay real-time video and data, like location, heading, battery life • Take high-resolution pictures of the ground in flight • Store photos and some flight data in non-volatile memory, á la “blackbox” system. • Control drone manually via a control unit
Environmental Issues • PCB manufacturing: - Emissions of heavy metals, radioactive elements into air - Organic and inorganic compounds in waste water • PCB area was minimized to reduce our particular environmental impact
Environmental Issues • Sensors and other IC Manufacturing - Hazardous chemicals required - Poisonous elements such as antimony, arsenic, palladium, lead are also used • ROHS certified products were used - This limits use of lead, mercury, cadmium
Environmental Issues • Lithium-Polymer Battery - Limited number of charging cycles - Significantly more volatile than Ni-Cd/ Ni-MH batteries • Recharge only when necessary, with help of battery management IC • Financial incentive for recycling batteries
Environmental Issues • Foam (Polystyrene) -Non biodegradable -Type of plastic • Recycle responsibly • Attach warning labels
Ethical Issues • Misuse - The UAV could be used for spying - Invasion of privacy • Warning labels • Mention in user manual
Ethical Issues • Injury - UAV has considerable momentum - Can cause personal injuries • Warning labels • Age limit • Alternative control system, whenever necessary
Testing Issues The UAV will be thoroughly tested to the following regards: - Software integrity - Mechanical faults due to rough handling - Steady flight in good weather
