  1. Using the ‘Not Mine’ Tool in e-Marker®

  2. Agenda • Background • When to use it • Part response • Whole response • Problem escalation

  3. Background • Candidates respond in an unconstrained answer booklet • Scanning software reads numbers and identifies start and finish of answers for 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc • DRS staff carry out number verification and ‘fixing’ activity to correct instances where candidates have not been clear • Awarding body staff will undertake ‘fixing’ in exceptional circumstances • Some instances may still appear in the marking queue • Markers need to use the ‘Not Mine’ tool to identify these and ensure that the entirety of a candidate’s script is marked

  4. When to use the ‘Not Mine’ tool • When marking a specific related part, you may notice that: • Some of the candidate response relates to another question on the paper, or • All of the candidate response relates to another question on the paper • In both cases, you must highlight this to the administration team by using THE ‘NOT MINE’ TOOL

  5. Handling a ‘part’ response • Click on the ‘Not Mine’ highlighter tool in the top toolbar • From the drop down list, select the ‘Not mine area highlight’ option

  6. Handling a ‘part’ response • Click and drag the mouse over the part of the clip that does not belong to the current question – this will highlight it in blue. You can adjust the size by dragging the ‘handles’ to cover the entire area as appropriate, or delete it if desired • If you can, add a comment when asked, to identify which part you think the response belongs to. This is optional but helpful!

  7. Handling a ‘part’ response • Mark the remainder of the response that is relevant and submit using the green forward arrow. You can still go back one clip as normal if you wish to correct anything

  8. Handling a ‘whole’ response • Click on the ‘Not Mine’ highlighter tool in the top toolbar • From the drop down list, select the ‘Not mine entire portion’ option

  9. Handling a ‘whole’ response • The whole portion will be highlighted in blue • As for ‘part’ response, add a comment if you can in the Not Mine Suggestion box • The mark entry box will be populated with an ‘N’ – this prevents you from awarding a mark as none of the clip relates to the question you are currently marking. Click the green forward arrow and the highlighted area will be sent to be reallocated appropriately

  10. Problem escalation You should only use the ‘Problem Escalation’ if: • You wish to raise a ‘non fatal’ problem with the administrator – for example, if the candidate has used inappropriate language • You are unable to mark the image displayed and the on screen tools cannot assist you • You are unsure how to apply the marking guidance to a specific response (it may also be worth directly discussing this with your senior marker) REMEMBER TO USE THE ‘NOT MINE’ TOOL TO HIGHLIGHT ANY ENTIRE OR PARTIAL RESPONSE THAT IS NOT RELEVANT TO THE QUESTION YOU ARE MARKING – THIS ENSURES THAT ALL OF A CANDIDATE’S SCRIPT IS PRESENTED FOR MARKING
