The Academic Network at the University of Montenegro, managed by the Center of Information Systems (CIS), supports around 20,000 users across six cities. It encompasses 18 faculties, four research institutes, and more. CIS is pivotal in developing network services, including web hosting, internet connectivity, and e-learning tools. Monitoring tools like Cacti assist in managing bandwidth and ensuring service availability. Future expansions focus on comprehensive traffic monitoring and improving notification mechanisms, enhancing overall network efficiency and reliability.

Academic Network – University of Montenegro • MREN’s technical body is Center of Information System (CIS) of University of Montenegro. • CIS is responsible for development and maintenance of Academic Network and services for common use in the Network. • Academic Network consist of: • 18 faculties • 4 research institutes • Central library • student dormitories • Ministry of Science and Education is connected on Academic Network • Approximately 20000users of Academic Network
Academic Network – University of Montenegro • Geographically Academic Network spreads across 6 cities: • Podgorica • Cetinje • Nikšić • Bijelo Polje • Herceg-Novi • Kotor
Academic Network – University of Montenegro • CIS provides following services: • web hosting, mail, ftp, dns … • DBs for students and personnel • Internet connectivity • applications for managing student database and University accounting service • GRID • Video conferencing • E-Learning
Monitoring tools • No standardized monitoring tool for all members of University • Only 20 Mbps optical link to Internet requires bandwidth monitoring within the network • Usage of CACTI monitoring tool
Monitoring tools • Cacti is an open source, web-based graphing tool designed as a frontend to RRDtool's data storage and graphing functionality. Cacti allows a user to poll services at predetermined intervals and graph the resulting data. • Cacti uses SNMP protocol to poll data from devices. • A common usage in our network is to monitor network network bandwidth utilization.
Monitoring tools • Testing tool named What’s up • Basic feature of ICMP availability because of services we provide • E-mail and sound notifications
Monitoring tools – future plans • Necessity • Monitoring stats of vital servers (CPU, Memory, Disk space, in/out traffic). • Monitoring of type of traffic on access router and on routers in remote PoP’s. • Flexibility in notification options (SMS, e-mail, display in NOC…). • Time of response from all network devices in the core.
Monitoring tools • Thank you for your patience!
