  7. State Board of Education Appoints New Commissioner • The State Board of Education today appointed Chief of Staff John Winn to head Florida's K-20 Department of Education. Commissioner Jim Horne, who announced his resignation and stepped down August 31, 2004. Winn assumed the role of Commissioner effective September 1, 2004. "John Winn has built a solid reputation and earned the respect of the education community, policy makers, and department staff," said Board Chairman Phil Handy. "He brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to student learning that will serve the people of Florida well.” The Commissioner reports directly to the State Board of Education. Responsibilities include serving as the chief executive of Florida's K-20 education system and providing guidance and direction for more than 2,000 employees of the Department of Education.

OSFA July NSLDS Reporting • OSFA's monthly submission for August 2004 was transmitted to NSLDS on 8/25/04. • Updates to NSLDS from August’s submission appeared on NSLDS on 8/26/04. • Data contained in August’s submission reflects data extracted from our system on 8/23/04. • OSFA’s SMRY screen has been "refreshed" and now displays the current NSLDS loan statuses. • The September NSLDS submission will be processed by NSLDS on 9/22/04.

  11. Mapping Your Future Debt/Salary Wizard • Mapping Your Future (MYF) enhanced its debt/salary wizard (mapping-your-future.org/apps/debtwizard/), allowing borrowers to determine how much salary is needed to support student loan repayment and how much they can borrow based on future expected earnings, without limiting them to specific interest rates. The enhanced wizard allows borrowers to enter any interest rate and includes a link to the current interest rate chart. The debt/salary wizard is one of MYF's financial literacy and default prevention tools.   12. Mapping Your Future Spanish Stafford Entrance Counseling • Mapping Your Future is pleased to announce that they have begun the Pilot Phase of the Spanish Stafford Entrance Counseling. In Florida, Miami Dade College (Kendall Campus), Miami Dade College (InterAmerican Campus), Miami Dade (North Campus), and Carlos Albizu University have agreed to pilot the program for the Fall semester. MYF has room for additional pilot sites. If your institution is interested in piloting the program, please contact Armando Salas-Amaro at Armando.Salas-Amaro@fldoe.org.

  13. Official Cohort Default Rates • FY 2002 official cohort default rates were released on September 13 to all eligible schools. Delivery was made to domestic schools enrolled in the eCDR process via the SAIG destination point designated by the school. Each eCDR package contained (1) a cover letter (message class SHDRLROP), (2) a reader-friendly loan record detail report (message class SHCDRROP), and (3) an extract-type loan record detail report (message class SHCDREOP). Domestic schools not enrolled in eCDR must download their cohort default rates and accompanying Loan Record Detail Reports.

  14. www.learnstudentaid.org • LearnStudentAid, NASFAA’s on line learning community, went live on September 1, 2004. Enrollment is now open for classes beginning October 1 and later. Please visit: www.LearnStudentAid.org and check out "How to Enroll" to complete the enrollment process.   16. Question of the Day • Is a college student, who is a minor, eligible to borrow funds in the Stafford Loan Program? • Answer: Yes, provided they have received a high school diploma or GED and meet standard borrower requirements. (Reference Statute 743.05)
