CURRENT STATUS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT SECTOR • Environmental education for LGUs are integrated into the orientation programs for elected officials • Focus has been given to educating LGUs to enhance their capacities to comply with environmental laws • Existence of best practices in environmental management among local governments • Trend towards alliance building to address environmental challenges • Installation of performance measurement • system for environmental management
ACTIONS OR PROGRAMS CURRENTLY UNDERTAKEN IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT SECTOR • Capacity Development on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Along the following sectors: • Solid Waste Management • Transport Management • Economic Development • Water and Sanitation • Air Quality Management • Renewable Energy • Disaster Risk Reduction Establishment of CAPABILITY BUILDING MECHANISMS FOR URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Technical Assistance on the POLICY FORMULATION ON LG INITIATIVES & BEST PRACTICES ON ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT ON LG SECTOR Translation to local ordinances of national laws on environment –Air quality act, Solid waste management, Water and sanitation, Forest management, Coastal Resource management

GAPS AND CHALLENGES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN LG SECTOR • Lack of environmental education program for communities driven by local governments • Need to integrate climate change issues in local • government plans and decisions • Lack of financing support for environment projects • Need to design other programs on environmental • management such as transport management, • renewable energy and air quality management.
COMMITMENT OF LG SECTOR TO IMPLEMENT RA 9512 for 2008-2014 Ensuring Capacity Building mechanisms on creating environmentally –friendly policies and programs to be institutionalized at the local government level Preventing environmental degradation through strong implementation of environmental laws Continuing education for LGUs on environmental management Integration of Environmental Education and Climate Change in the Orientation of the Newly Elected Officials Strengthening of performance evaluation of LGUs along environmental management Expansion and strengthening of EE network for LGUs
