Purpose of the Early College High School Model • Earn an Associate of Arts Degree, or up to two years of transferable college credit, while earning a Distinguished High School Diploma • Prepare students to be successful in college • Serve traditionally underserved students: • First generation college-goers • At Risk students • Minority students • Low socioeconomic status (Free or Reduced Lunch) • ECHS is not discriminatory • ECHS cohort (class) will reflect district demographics • A portion of the ECHS cohort will not meet the above criteria(since SISD district demographics are not 100% for any of the above categories)

Demographics and Selection Guidelines • All students must pass the 1st Administration of the 2011 8th Grade Reading and Math TAKS testsand all core classes for the 2010-11 school year (average of both semesters) • Splendora ECHS will not be required to adhere to the 100 student enrollment limit for the 2011-12 school year

Splendora ECHS • 1 of 49 ECHS in Texas • School with-in a school model (2011-12 school year) • Serving Grades 8th -11th(2011-12 school year) • Travel in a 9th grade cohort • ECHS Teachers are trained in the Common Instructional Framework • College services offered free of cost to our students (Tuition, fees, testing, textbooks, and laptops*) *Splendora ECHS students will be issued a laptop, battery charger, and protective sleeve, at no cost for their use while enrolled in Splendora ECHS. If physical damage occurs to the laptop that is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty, or if the cost to repair any component of the laptop exceeds $25.00, students will be required to purchase insurance for $25.00 to repair or replace the laptop. There will be a $25.00 replacement fee for misplaced or damaged battery chargers.

The 2011-2012 9th Grade ECHS Student • Is a current 8th grade student attending SJHS (8th Grade ECHS Outreach Students do not have to reapply) • Is not required to be a GT student • Is dedicated to school and shows a sincere interest in academics • Is willing to dedicate at least two hours, on average, to homework each evening • Will be required to enroll in all advanced core academic classes (English, History, Math, and Science) • Will be required to continue or begin Spanish as a 9th grade student

High School and College Classes • Students will be allowed to select two electives and will be required to enroll in advanced core academic high school classes • Sample SECHS Schedule: • 1st Period- Algebra I • 2nd Period- College Course #1 • 3rd Period- College Course #2 • 4th Period- 1st Elective (ex. Spanish or Cheerleading) • 5th Period- World Geography • 6th Period- Biology • 7th Period- English I • 8th Period- 2nd Elective (ex. Athletics or Medical Terminology) • Scheduling options: • Required college course enrollment for qualifying students • Required THEA Prep enrollment for qualifying students

LSC-K: You are a College Student • As a college student, the following are expected of you: • Responsible • Respectful • Behave as a college student • Self motivated and driven • Dedicated to rigorous and intense college courses • Communicate with your professors when you have questions, concerns, are going to be absent, etc. • Be aware of your grades at all times • LSC-K Professors will not communicate with parents, enter grades into Gradespeed, or report grade on report cards

Two Year Cost Comparison (Amounts represent potential savings to students and parents not actual cost to SISD) • Sam Houston State University: • $15,800 per year x 2 years = $31,600 • University of Houston: • $17,700 per year x 2 years = $35,400 • Texas A &M University: • $20,100 per year x 2 years = $40,200 • University of Texas: • $25,800 per year x 2 years = $51,600

Transferability of College Courses Texas Administrative Code TITLE 19EDUCATION PART 1TEXAS HIGHER EDUCATION COORDINATING BOARD CHAPTER 4RULES APPLYING TO ALL PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN TEXAS SUBCHAPTER BTRANSFER OF CREDIT, CORE CURRICULUM AND FIELD OF STUDY CURRICULA RULE §4.28 Core Curriculum (a) General. In accordance with Texas Education Code, §§61.821 - 61.831, each general academic institution, community college, and health-related institution shall design and implement a core curriculum, including specific courses composing the curriculum, of no less than 42 lower-division semester credit hours. Health-related institutions should encourage their students to complete their core curriculum requirement at a general academic institution or community college. (b) Component Areas. Each institution's core curriculum must be designed to satisfy the exemplary educational objectives specified for the component areas of the "Core Curriculum: Assumptions and Defining Characteristics" adopted by the Board; all lower-division courses included in the core curriculum must be consistent with the "Texas Common Course Numbering System," and must be consistent with the framework identified in Charts I and II of this subsection. Chart I specifies the minimum number of semester credit hours required in each of five major component areas that a core curriculum must include (with sub-areas noted in parentheses). Chart II specifies options available to institutions for the remaining 6 - 12 semester credit hours. (c) Transfer of Credit--Completed Core Curriculum. If a student successfully completes the 42 semester credit hour core curriculum at a Texas public institution of higher education, that block of courses may be transferred to any other Texas public institution of higher education and must be substituted for the receiving institution's core curriculum. A student shall receive academic credit for each of the courses transferred and may not be required to take additional core curriculum courses at the receiving institution unless the Board has approved a larger core curriculum at that institution

Summer School Requirement • THEA Prep Course • Dates: June 6th -24th • Time: 8:00 am- 3:00 pm • Exception: If a student takes and passes the THEA test on May 7, 2011, they will not be required to attend THEA Prep over the summer. • Reading: 230 • Writing: 220 • Math: Need a score on file. Do not have to meet math passing minimum requirement for the freshmen year. • Testing at Lone Star College-Kingwood • Deadline: May 24, 2011 • Submit score report to Mrs. Swinney

  12. Splendora ECHS Application Process • Complete the Application for Admission and Essay • May 5, 2011 by 3:00 pm: Applications and Essays are due to Mrs. Swinney. Late applications and essays will NOT be accepted. • May 26, 2011: Notification letters will be mailed (acceptance or denial)

Summary • Complete and return the application and essay to Mrs. Swinney by 3:00 pm on May 5, 2011 • Take the THEA May 7th in the SHS library from 8:00 am -1:00 pm (in attempt to be exempt from the mandatory THEA Prep Summer School Session) • Please sign up tonight if you are interested • THEA scores accepted by LSC-K (and required to be exempt from the mandatory THEA Prep Summer School Session): • Reading: 230 • Writing: 220 • Math: Need a score on file. Do not have to meet math passing minimum requirement for the freshmen year. • Testing at Lone Star College-Kingwood • Deadline: May 24, 2011
