  2. What Are Black Holes? • A black hole is a region of space that has so much mass concentrated in it that there is no way for a nearby object to escape its gravitational pull. • It is called "black" because it absorbs all the light that hits the horizon.

How Are They Formed? • They form from massive stars that become supernova. • Their core regions implode, and no known force can withstand the force of gravity once the imploding mass gets close to its eventual size as a black hole; a size determined by the masses so-called Schwarzschild radius.

  4. What Does A Black Hole Look Like? • You normally wouldn’t see a black hole unless you knew what you were looking for. • Part of it past the event horizon is literally invisible. • Humans can only make a strong hypothesis if what they look like.

  5. If You Were Caught In A Black Hole • As you fall toward the black hole, you move faster and faster, accelerated by its gravity. Your feet feel a stronger gravitational pull than your head, because they are closer to the black hole. As a result, your body is stretched apart. For small black holes, this stretching is so strong that your body is completely torn apart before you reach the event horizon. • If you fall into a supermassive black hole, your body remains intact, even as you cross the event horizon. But soon thereafter you reach the central singularity, where you are squashed into a single point of infinite density. You have become one with the black hole. Unfortunately, you are unable to write home about the experience.

What Scientists Believe • Scientists believe that in the core of our solar system, there is a black hole. • Astronomers have long suspected that super massive black holes sit at the heart of most galaxies and may be closely related to galaxy growth. But concrete proof of the existence of these black holes has remained elusive.

  7. Cool Facts On Black Holes • There is no limit to how small or how large a black hole can be. The size and mass of a black hole are directly related. The more massive a black hole is, the more space it takes up. • The nearest black hole is 1,600 light years away. That is about 16 quadrillion kilometers for Earth.

  8. More Cool Facts • One the interesting black hole facts is that they can not suck up all of the matter in the Universe. Each black hole has its own event horizon, much like the gravitational field of a planet. If matter is not in that horizon it will never get sucked into the black hole. • Many theorists believe that a black hole can eventually evaporate.
