  1. Narrative Writing Unit Essential Question: How do writers develop an effective narrative?

  2. What is a narrative? A narrative tells a story and includes a setting, well-developed characters, a climax, and often times a problem and resolution. It can be fiction or non-fiction.

  3. Developing a character • There are two kinds of characters: static (unchanging throughout) and dynamic (undergoes some type of change) • You can create characters of each type in a narrative piece • Characterization: *Physical features *Personality *What makes them unique? *Why should the reader be interested in them? *Give details!!

  4. Creating a memorable story…Fiction or Non-Fiction What do I need to remember when writing a narrative?

Forming your paragraphs • Plot- main chunk of your story (what it’s about) • Foreshadowing- hinting about something in the future • Flashback- hinting about something the happened in the past • Climax- most exciting part in the story • Resolution- when the problem in the story is resolved • Vivid verbs- use descriptive words!

  6. What else? • Style-expresses writer’s individuality (poetic, straightforward, lighthearted, etc.) Style is expressed in your word choices and sentence variety • Tone/Mood- attitude toward the subject you’re writing about (serious, playful, formal, informal, etc.)

  7. What else? • Make the story your own…it is much more enjoyable to recreate a story than to just retell it…involve your reader. • Use humor, imagination, or even horror to capture the reader’s attention. You can even ask your reader questions…
