On October 16, 2006, during the EMANI meeting in Grenoble, Jiang Airong presented Tsinghua University Library's achievements in the first phase of the China-US Million Book Digital Library Project (CADAL). This collaborative initiative aims to digitize vast collections of Chinese literature and historical texts, with Tsinghua tasked to digitize 50,000 volumes. As of July 2006, over 1 million collections have been digitized, including ancient and modern texts. The project enhances access to academic resources globally while navigating copyright challenges for certain materials.

Introduce about Tsinghua Library completedfirst phase tasks of the China-US Million Book Digital Library Project.
The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project • The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project is often called CADAL (China-America Digital Academic Library) project in China. • The CADAL is a collaborative project between universities in China and America. For the past three years, the Ministry of Education of China provided 70 Million RMB Funding to CADAL.
The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project The CADAL project has 19 partners in China. Among those have 16 Universities.
The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project Tsinghua Library is one partner of CADAL and takes charge of digitalization of ancient books, the Republic of China (Min Guo) books and thedegree dissertationsin THU Library. According to CADAL’s plan, Tsinghua Library’s task is digitization of50 000volumes of Chinese collections.
The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project Until July, 2006, the following collections are scanned: the ancient books → 2 638 819 pages (16 945 volumes) the Republic of China(Min Guo) books →3 465 616 pages (23 102 volumes) the degree dissertations →948 721pages (10 186 volumes) Total is 7 053 156 pages (50 233 volumes).

The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project Because it is difficult to select and transport English book from America to China. Finally, 85% are Chinese books, 15% are English books.

The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project At present • About 150 000 Chinese ancient books and100 000 English old books(only before 1923) are available to everyone over the Internet. • Because copy right issue, the Min Guo books and journals, the degree dissertations and Chinese modern booksare not available to everyone, some only open to all partners of CADAL project, some only open to 3-4 partners.
