Why Public Education? • Lifetime earning estimates are approximately 20% higher for a high school graduate than that of a non-high school graduate. • Public education increases our nation’s human capital. • Public education increases the wealth of our nation. Challenges in Public Education • Public Education is dependent upon public funding- THIS MEANS TAXES! • Control has migrated from local to federal but the funding has lagged. • When the tax base shrinks everyone must pay more. School taxes are based on mils, $1 per $1000 of assessed value.

How assessments work. • If a property is assessed at a value of $50,000 and is taxes at a rate of 20 mils, the annual property tax will be 50000X.001x20, which equals $1000. • If another property is assessed at $200,000 and is taxed at 5 mils, the annual property tax will be 200000x.001x5, which equals $1000.
