  2. A Second Opportunity to Change History

  3. Close your eyes… The first word that you think of, when you hear the word home. Your favorite memory of playing with your friends when you were a young child. One word that describes how you feel when participating in your favorite activity. One person that is important to you in your life. One dream you hope to accomplish in your lifetime.

  4. elMiNaTe Partnership Hand in hand, Kiwanis and UNICEF will eliminate MNT and change the world. Kiwanis' commitment, vision and strength in reaching communities and leaders will help wipe out this cruel, centuries-old disease and pave the way for other interventions. +

  5. Iodine Deficiency Disorder • In 1994, Kiwanis began a partnership with UNICEF and leveraged and raised nearly US$100 million. • These funds are now at work in more than 103 nations. • 80 million children in the developing world will be born free of IDD this year • Hailed as one of the greatest public health triumphs of the 20th century.

  6. What does MNT mean? ELIMINATE Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus

  7. What is MNT? MNT is caused when tetanus spores, which can be found in soil across the globe, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. These infected newborns suffer excruciating convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

  8. Who suffers from MNT? Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach, and those without health care. • In 28 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, it still strikes babies and mothers who have little or no access to health care — either because they are poor, live in remote areas or are caught in humanitarian emergencies.

  9. The Effects of MNT • 1 baby dies every 9 minutes from tetanus. • 160 babies die each day from tetanus. • Kills nearly 60,000 newborn children and a significant number of mothers every year.

  10. The EFFECTS of Project Eliminate • 3 doses of tetanus vaccine = immunity from tetanus. • Woman + vaccine = protected baby. • (US) $1.80 protects 1 mother and her future children. • The Eliminate Project saves and protects millions of moms and her babies. • Elimination = <1 MNT per 1,000 births.

  11. The Worldwide Message These women matter. They deserve to give birth to healthy babies. • Every child deserves a chance to reach their full potential.

  12. How can YOU alone make an impact?

  13. There is a solution $1.80 will provide 3 vaccinations to prevent future children from contracting MNT.

  14. A plan…Eliminate MNT by 2015 • HOW? • Vaccinate over 129 million mothers • Eliminate MNT from the remaining 28 countries • Raise 110 million dollars by 2015 • The Kiwanis Family must come together

  15. Donations & Services Donationsprovide much needed supplies and services such as: Vaccines Syringes Safe Transport and Storage Education to communities Training of heath Workers

  16. Where the funds go… • Immunization of women of reproductive age and pregnant women • Educating communities on MNT and clean delivery practices • Creation of Kiwanis sustainability fund • Kiwanian education and organizational enhancement

  17. Countries with MNT in 2001

  18. Since then… There has been a 90% reduction in MNT mortality in the last 20 years. More than 119 million women have been immunized with two or more doses of TT vaccine $1,492,454.77 raised.

  19. Countries with MNT in 2013 Map of countries with MNT in 2008 MNT was eliminated from 3 countries in 2013 Cameroon eliminates maternal and neonatal tetanus - 1/23/2013 Iraq eliminates maternal and neonatal tetanus - 5/9/2013Côte d’Ivoire eliminates maternal and neonatal tetanus - 5/18/13 MNT has been eliminated from 31 countries.
