  2. Operation Shingle

  3. The Big Three (Stalin, Roosevelt, Churchill) January • Tuesday the 11th: A major attack on Cassino is launched by the allies. (the US, and the British Commonwealth) • Friday the 14th:Russian armies overtake German Army Group North after a two week offensive. • Saturday the 22nd: Amphibious landings at Anzio begin, by midnight. 45 000 troopsareashore . This was known as “Operation Shingle”. • Friday the 28th: German Army Group North is pushed out of the city of Leningrad.

  4. February • Friday the 11th: The entire US 142nd division is destroyed. • Thursday the 17th: The allies lose major ground around Anzio. • Sunday the 20th: The beginning of Big Week bombing campaign 3300 sorties flown in 5 days. “Big Week”

  5. March Wednesday the 15th: third offensive to take Cassino launched. Tuesday the 21st: Monte Cassino is finally in allied hands. Polish soldiers in Monte Cassino, Italy

  6. April Monday the 3rd: The KMS Tirpitz, one of two German Dreadnought class battleships is attacked by Royal Navy Air Arm and required 3 months of repairs. The KMS Tirpitz

  7. May • Monday the 1st: A major soviet offensive begins. • Thursday the 11th: A forth offensive at Cassino begins. • Saturday the 13th : German paratroopers leave Cassino to the allies. Cassino

  9. June • Monday the 5th: 6000 allied ships depart England bound for the shores of Normandy. While paratroopers are dropped inland to secure bridges and disrupt troop movements. • Tuesday the 6th: D-day landings begin on Juno, Gold, Omaha, Utah, and Sword beaches. By 11 am the British and Canadians had pushed inland and captured their main objective.

  10. Operation Bagration

  11. June Continued… General Georgi Zhukov • Monday the 19th: Russian partisans (resistance fighters) launch massive attacks on German supply depots and lines of communication these attacks last for days. • Thursday the 22nd: “Operation Bagration” is launched in Belorussia by the Russian Red Army under General Georgi Zhukov although it was outshined by D-Day the Russians committed 2.3 million men to destroying the German armies in and around the city of Minsk . • Friday the 30th: German casualties from “Operation Bagration” have reached 200 000.

  12. July • Tuesday the 4th: Minsk falls into soviet hands, after the battle sum German casualties have reached 400 000 men. • Tuesday the 11th: The entire German Ninth Army is decimated by soviet forces. • Thursday the 20th: Through “Operation Goodwood” British and Canadian armoured divisions capture Caen from the German defenders.

  13. The city of Warsaw: after the uprising… August • Tuesday the 1st: 30 000 Poles begin the Warsaw uprising forcing Hitler to commit more forces to the city instead of fighting the approaching Soviets. • Sunday the 20th: The Falaise Pocket is closed by the meeting of American and Canadian troops trapping the remaining German armies in Normandy. • Friday the 25th: Paris is liberated by the allies. • Wednesday the 30th: Russian offensive ends with almost all lost territory reclaimed by the Red Army.

  14. Operation Market Garden

  15. September • Sunday the 17th: “Operation Market Garden” proposed by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery begins with paratroopers being dropped into Belgium to capture vital bridges. • Monday the 25th: 6000 Allied soldiers taken prisoner and another 1000 are killed as result of “Operation Market Garden” to this point. October • Tuesday the 3rd: Polish forces are forced to surrender to the Germans after Stalin refuses to aid them ending the Warsaw uprising. • Tuesday the 31st: 250 000 Polish civilians and soldiers are either executed or deported to concentration camps as a result of the failed uprising.   17. November • Sunday the 12th: The KMS Tirpitz is finally destroyed by the RAF. The wreck of the Tirpitz is broken up by British, Norwegian and German firms.

  18. December • Saturday the 16th: Germans launch their offensive in the Ardennes; better known as “The Battle of the Bulge.” • Wednesday the 20th: The 101st airborne division is completely surrounded by the Germans at Bastogne. • Saturday the 23rd: Beginning of 2000 air attacks on the advancing German columns.

  19. December Continued… • Monday the 25th: German 2nd Panzer Division is stopped by the allies stalling the advance. They suffer 3500 casualties and 400 vehicles lost to the allies. • Thursday the 28th: Hitler orders a halt of the offences but isn’t willing to retreat leaving his troops tired and exposed.
