  1. ANKARA The city of Ankara lies in the center of Anatolia on the eastern edge of the great, high Anatolian Plateau, at an altitude of 850 meters.

  2. The city was an important cultural, trading, and arts center in Roman times, and an important trading center on the caravan route to the east in Ottoman times. It had declined im importance by the nineteenth century.

  3. It again became an important center when Kemal ATATÜRK chose it as the base from which to direct the War of Liberation. By consequence of its role in the war and its strategic position, it was declared the capital of the new Republic of Turkey on October 13 th,1923.

  13. The region known in ancient times as Cappadocia is the setting for some of nature’s most bizarre wonders. It incorporates the provinces of Aksaray, Nevşehir, Niğde, Kayseri, and Kırşehir. For most people , the name Cappadocia suggest the towns and vicinities of Uçhisar, Görme, Avanos, Ürgüp, Ihlara etc., where, in the course of million of years, the land has been shaped into fantastic forms.

  14. The Göreme Open- Air Museum is where the ‘educational system that unified all the the ideas of Christianity’ of St Basil the Great and his brothers, was born.

  15. In the Tokalı church, the Convent of Monks and Nuns, the Chapel of St Basil, and the Elmalı, Yılanlı,Karanlık and Çarıklı churches the architectural details and frescoes seem as alive today as when ther were new.

In Avanos, located 18 kilometers from Nevşehir, there is a traditional of pottery-making that has been alive since Hittite times. • If you want to give it a try, call at a workshop, don an apron, and take up your position before a wheel. What happens next will depend upon the skill of your hand and the vividness of your imagination.

  17. Pottery- making, porcelain manufacturing, leather- working, handicrafts, and the making of delectable wines are well- developed activities in the region of Cappadocia, nature’s ‘art gallery’, whose natural, historical, and cultural assets entice visitors wit their miracles and spells.

  21. GENERAL INFORMATION • Getting to Ankara There is regular air service via Turkish Airlines (see www.thy.com for flight information) to nearly all the major cities of Europe.

  22. Ankara Airport, is named Esenboğa Havalimanı, is near to aproximately 45 minutes to central Ankara. Two transportation systems are available. First of them is called Havaş Bus. Havaş Bus Ticket is nearly 10 Turkish Liras (10YTL). You can by that ticket in the bus. The another is yellow cabs which is called Taksi (Taxi). Taxis have a taximeter system with rates varying during the day and the night.

  23. Visas All participants in the Meeting will require a valid passport and a visa forvisiting Turkey. Please contact your nearest Turkish Embassy/Consulate forthis purpose. Participants from those countries where there is no Turkishdiplomatic representation can obtain their visa at the airport on arrival toTurkey.

  24. Transportation There are different means of public transportation; bus services run either by the municipality or private firms provide access to all areas. The underground system (Ankaray) runs in the major directions. The city is also served by traditional yellow cabs and dolmuses (minubuses running along specified routes).

  25. Driving LicenceInternational driving licences are recognised throughout Turkey. Car rentalfirms ask for a valid national or international licence.

  26. Postal Services Hotels often provide basic postal services. Post offices are open daily exceptSaturday, Sunday and public holidays.

  27. Food There is wide and exciding range of food establishments all over Ankara from corner take- away restaurants, pizza and kebap houses to lavish up- market restaurants offering everything from traditional Turkish cuisine to speciality cuisines.

  29. Currency The local currency is the New Turkish Liras (YTL). The exchange rate changes daily. Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airport, banks, hotels and exchange offices. International Credit Cards are widely accepted.

  30. Banks Bank business hours are from Monday to Friday, 09.00-16.30. Banks areclosed on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. All banks have similarexchange rates

  32. SecurityBased on the data provided by well known statistical institutes of the worldfor major metropolises, Ankara is one of the few cities with a minimumamount of crime. Despite its intensive population and traffic, you can walkthrough most parts of the city.

  33. ShoppingMost shops in Ankara are generally open from 09:00 to 19:00 Monday toSaturday. Some of the supermarkets, shops, newspaper kiosks, restaurantsand food shops are also open on Sunday. In all the big shopping centers,major credit cards are accepted and your shopping will be tax free.
