  2. Expectations for Students All students will • Come to class on time with materials, homework, and current work. • Follow classroom routines and rules. • Complete class work and homework on time. • Respect classmates and teacher. • Work to the best of his/her abilities.

  3. Materials • Planner – please bring it and USE IT! • Independent Reading Book (IRB) – Based on their LEXILE level • Read 180 folder • rBook • Post-its

  4. We Believe: • reading is the most powerful tool for learning • active readers are better readers • you learn to read by reading • you learn to write by writing • you learn to communicate & use language effectively by talking about your reading and writing with others

  5. What is a Lexile Measure? A Lexile measure is a valuable piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text, a book or magazine article. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an "L" after it . For example, 880L is 880 Lexile.

  6. Homework May Include • Reading – 30 minutes + reading log • Writing Work – paragraphs and essays • Test preparation packets

  7. How Parents Can Help • Check the planner • Check the monthly calendar • Check supplies • Ask questions about READ 180 • Check the Independent Reading Book • Encourage your child to take advantage of the Homework Center • Check the quality of their work

  10. Online Tutoring A free service through www.tutor.com Professional tutors are available seven days a week from 2 P.M. – 11 P.M. Log on to http://www.wppl.lib.ny.us/ Click on: Have your White Plains Library card ready!  No limit/No Charge
