Collision Theory • Not all collisions lead to a reaction, in fact most collisions do not lead to a reaction • For a reaction to occur, there must be an effective collision between reactants • Correct orientation of molecules • Sufficient energy Rate = collision frequency X fraction effective
Sufficient Energy • In most reactions, only a small fraction of the total collisions have sufficient energy to overcome the activation energy (EA) of a reaction • Activation energy: • the minimum collision energy required for a reaction to occur • depends on the kinetic energy of the colliding particles
