  2. How are students served? • ADHD – not included in the 13 disability categories of IDEA • Students qualify under EBD, LD, or other health impairments • Students also may be served by 504 plans • Served if “learning is significantly impaired”

  3. Section 504 • Rehabilitation Act of 1973: civil rights law • prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. • ensures that the child with a disability has equal access to an education. • child may receive accommodations and modifications • Condition limits their ability to learn or benefit from the educational program

  4. Diagnosis • Symptoms must appear before age of 7. • Behavior occurs considerably more frequently and severely than peers of same developmental level • Evidenced in at least two settings • Symptoms present for at least 6 months • Inattention or hyperactivity OR both (mixed)

  5. Inattention (6 or more) • Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes • Difficulty sustaining attention • Does not seem to listen • Does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish • Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities • Avoids tasks that require sustained mental activity • Loses necessary things • Easily distracted • Often forgetful

  6. Hyperactivity-impulsivity (at least 6) • Fidgets • Leaves seat • Runs about or climbs excessively • Difficulty w. leisure or quiet activities • “on the go” • Talks excessively • Blurts out • Difficulty waiting • Interrupts and intrudes

  7. Identification • Interviews w. parents, teachers, student • Direct observation • Psychoeducational examination • Rating scale • Pediatric exam

  8. Types • Predominantly inattentive • Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive • Combined (most common: 55%)

  9. Etiology • Organic causes • Birth complications • Intellectual/developmental causes • Psychological issues • Environmental factors

  10. Characteristics • Low frustration tolerance Oppositional behavior • Temper outbursts Lack of effort • Resentment Aggression • Stubbornness Bossiness • Mood liability social isolation • Rejection by peers psychological dysfunction • Poor self esteem demanding
