  4. Autism Spectrum Disorder • Complex disorders of brain development • Characterized by : • Difficulties in social interaction • Verbal and nonverbal communication • Repetitive behaviors

  5. Difficulties in Social Interaction • Poor use of nonverbal communication • Difficulty in peer relations • Lack of social emotional reciprocity • Lack of shared enjoyment

  6. Verbal and Nonverbal Communication • Communication deficits may include: • Failure to develop speech • Use of repeated speech or echolalia • Difficulties maintaining conversations • Lack of imaginative and symbol play

  7. Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors • Inflexibility to changes in routines • Unusual preoccupations with narrow interests • Repetitive mannerisms (hand flapping, rocking, etc.)

  8. Prevalence: 1 in 88 children are affected by Autism 1 child in United States is diagnosed with ASD every 16 minutes 1 in 54 diagnosed are boys

What does an iPad offer? • Communication / Social / Behavior • Apps allow child to communicate wants and needs with just a touch • Text to speech • Picture exchanges • Assists caregivers in identifying child’s knowledge and interests • Gives child control and the ability to filter out distractions
