  1. CLASS PROCEDURE As soon as you come in you should: 1. Enter quietly 2. Place homework on your desk. 3. Open agenda to current week. 4. Work on Spiral Review due on Friday-All work should be on a separate sheet and only the answers are given on the question sheet. 5. Always have a book to read in case you have a few extra minutes. You will need your class notebook, colored pencils, pencil, glue stick, every day. IT WILL BE A QUIET TIME DURING OUR HOMEWORK CHECK.

  2. Check homework - Handout on combining like terms.

  3. In Margin TABLE OF CONTENTS R1

  4. Set up the right and left side of your pages. Traffic light page Learning Goal-I will What I know: (1-2 sentences about what your already know about the topic.) Proof of learning-guided practice. Reflection (creative) R9 8-29-13 7.EE.1, 7.EE.2 Distributive Property Learner Objective: Students should be able to use the distributive property to simplify expressions.

  5. Toolbox: Distributive property – for any real number a, b, c, a(b + c) = ab + ac. To multiply a sum or difference, multiply each number within the parentheses by the number outside the parentheses. Arithmetic Algebra 3(2 + 6) = 3(2) + 3(6) a(b + c) = ab + ac (2 + 6)3 = 2(3) + 6(3) (b + c)a = ba + ca 6(7 – 4) = 6(7) – 6(4) a(b – c) = ab – ac (7 – 4)6 = 7(6) – 4(6) (b – c)a = ba – ca Make a note card with this information.

  6. (4 ∙ 3) + (4∙ 5) = 12 + 20 = 32 4(3 + 5) = (4∙3) + (4∙5) = 12 + 20 = 32

  7. The Distributive Property with Variables 2(x + 4) Means 2 groups of (x+ 4) x + 4 + x + 4 = 2x + 8 The shortcut for the distributive property is to “distribute” the number on the outside to everyone term on the inside of the parentheses. • 2(x + 4) = 2(x) + 2(4) = 2x + 8 + = 2x + 8

  8. PRE-ALGEBRA LESSON 2-2 Model four groups of 3x – 4. Group like tiles. Use algebra tiles to multiply 4(3x – 4). So 4(3x – 4) = 12x – 16. 2-2

  9. PRE-ALGEBRA LESSON 2-2 Use the Distributive Property to find 15(110) mentally. 15(110) = 15(100 + 10)Write 110 as (100 + 10). = 15 • 100 + 15 • 10Use the Distributive Property. = 1,500 + 150Multiply. = 1,650Add. 2-2

  10. PRE-ALGEBRA LESSON 2-2 Ms. Thomas gave 5 pencils to each of her 37 students. What is the total number of pencils she gave to the students? (37)5 = (40 – 3)5Write 37 as (40 – 3). = 40 • 5 – 3 • 5Use the Distributive Property. = 200 – 15 Multiply. = 185 Subtract. Ms. Thomas gave the students 185 pencils. 2-2

  11. PRE-ALGEBRA LESSON 2-2 Simplify 11(23) + 11(7). 11(23) + 11(7) = 11(23 + 7)Use the Distributive Property. = 11(30)Add within parentheses. = 330Multiply. 2-2

  12. PRE-ALGEBRA LESSON 2-2 Use the Distributive Property to simplify. 1. 15(203) 2. 7(180) 3. 6(26) – 6(16) 4. (8a – 4)9 5. 2(14 + y) 3,045 1,260 72a – 36 60 28 + 2y 2-2

  13. Summary Reflection HW: Handout on Distributive Property Be sure you have your 4X6 index cards on Friday.
