  5. Importance of Non Verbal Communication • The majority of our feelings and intentions are sent through non verbal communication. • Non verbal communication is important because most people believe how you say it more then what you say. • The nonverbal signals you send either produce a sense of interest, trust and desire for connection. • It is believed that non-verbal communication is continuous, while verbal communication is discontinuous.

  6. Importance of Non Verbal Communication • Verbal activity never stands alone, it’ s always joined by non verbal action. • In order to achieved a successful non verbal communication, the speaker and the interpreter have to use the same codes of non verbal communication

  7. Uses of Non Verbal Communication • Modifying speech • Non-verbal communication has an important effect on what is communicated. • Replacing speech • Communication can be usually done without speaking • Expressing emotion • Emotions are expressed through non-verbal communication, where the voice and body can tell a lot more about how you feel than words. • Controlling conversation • Non-verbal signals are used a great deal in requesting, offering and managing control of who is speaking.

  8. Different use • Each culture use non verbal communication in different way • If you are not familiar with the local body language you may be misunderstood, and sometimes misinterpret the local nonverbal messages. • Non-verbal action can be dynamic but usually it is patterned by the respective culture. A successful interpretation of non-verbal elements conveyed same understanding of the symbols shared between interpreter and speaker. • Non verbal behavior varies from culture to culture, which means it is specific to each culture and may be interpreted differently.

  9. Examples of different use • Chinese don’t point with the finger but with an open hand. • Chinese tend to smile easily when they feel difficulty or embarrassment. • Americans keep a distance from the person who converse • In Britain, hugging, kissing and touching is usually reserved for family members and very close friends.
