  1. Tools for Managing Electronic Collections in the Scholarly EnvironmentBJTU, Beijing, November 22, 2004 Tamar Sadeh Tamr.sadeh@exlibrisgroup.com

  2. Agenda • Two of Ex Libris tools for the digital library: SFX and MetaLib • A link server: SFX • What is SFX? • Open linking framework • SFX knowledge base • SFX as a core of the digital library • A library portal: MetaLib • What is a library portal? • Metasearching • Integration of MetaLib in the library environment • Verde, the e-resource management system from Ex Libris

  3. Tools for the Digital Library • SFX: a link server, provides context-sensitive links within the library e-collections • MetaLib: a library portal, provides a gateway to the library e-resources, metasearching, and personalized services • Both originate from an academic research: • SFX: Herbert Van de Sompel, Ghent University, Belgium • MetaLib: ZIB institution at the KOBV consortium in Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany

  4. Current Status (November, 2004) • 680 customers in 33 countries • 61% licensed both MetaLib and SFX • 68% consortium members, in 44 consortia • 54% non-ALEPH customers • Active user group, SMUG: www.smugnet.org

  6. Context-Sensitive Reference Linking Services Portal e-print OPAC A&I Full Text Digital Collection Citations eTOC

  7. Full Text A&I e-print Web Citations Why OpenURL? • Limitations of previous linking solutions • Information providers control the links • Links are dependent on vendor agreements • Links are not sensitive to user’s context (the “appropriate copy” problem) • High maintenance of proprietary solutions • Expensive collection not used optimally • Focus on full text links only

  10. The OpenURL Framework • No hardwired links, but rather: • Institutional link server: new component in the link process • OpenURL: specification for interoperability between information resources and link servers Van de Sompel, Herbert and Oren Beit-Arie. July, 2001. "Open Linking in the Scholarly Information Environment Using the OpenURL Framework." D-Lib Magazine. 7(3).

  12. OpenURL • OpenURL version 0.1 is the de facto industry standard • OpenURL 1.0 — NISO Z39.88 • Enables the transfer of metadata from an information resource (SFX source) to a linking server (SFX server) • Must be implemented by the source in order to comply with the OpenURL framework

  13. Step 2: The link server (at sfx.mycollege.edu) extracts metadata from the OpenURL Author: Anderson, DavidTitle: The deterrence hypothesis and picking pockets at the pickpockets hanging Journal: American Law and EconomicsISSN: 1465-7252Date: 2002Volume: 4Issue: 2Page: 295 Step 3: The link server matches data elements against the link server's knowledge base, determines the appropriate services, computes the links, and displays the menu Step 1: An OpenURL generated by the source and sent to the link server http://sfx.mycollege.edu?genre=article&atitle=The deterrence hypothesis and picking pockets at the pickpockets hanging&title=American Law and Economics&issn=1465-7252&date=2002 &volume=4&issue=2&spage=295&aulast=Anderson&aufirst=David

  33. What is an e-resource management system? “A system that supports management of the information and workflows necessary to efficiently select, evaluate, acquire, maintain, renew/cancel and provide informed access to e-resources in accordance with their business and license terms.” Ivy Anderson (Harvard University Library) and Ellen Duranceau (MIT Libraries) DLF Electronic Resource Management Initiative Final report: http://www.diglib.org/pubs/dlfermi0408/

  34. Verde • A staff tool to manage electronic collections through the entire resource lifecycle • Standalone, integrated, and interoperable with other applications: • Library systems’ acquisitions and OPAC; • A-Z lists; • Linking servers; • Metasearch systems; • And more.

  35. Verde for collection development • Global e-resource marketplace • Library’s e-resource collection • Library’s expenditure Global knowledge base Local database Cost and usage entities
