General Expectations • Students are expected to follow the school rules. • Students are expected to be respectful towards children and adults. • Students are expected to arrive at 8:40 in the morning and 12:50 after lunch. • Students are expected to leave all toys at home unless notified by teacher. • Students are expected to keep essential items in lockers (backpacks, coats, art shirts, and lunches).

Classroom Expectations • Raise a hand to speak. • Listen carefully and follow directions. • Work quietly and use time wisely. • Contribute to the group in class discussions. • Complete work on time and give it their best effort. • Take care of school materials. • Be bully-free! • Follow the Washington Way!

  4. Additional Information • School Safety – Lunch/After School Dismissal • We cannot send your child home with someone else unless we have written consent. • No toys allowed in school. Balls for recess are permitted except for footballs. • Birthday Celebrations • Guest Readers • Edible treats are not allowed. • Alternatives – pencils, erasers, small school supplies • Personal Invitations – Invitations are not allowed to be passed out in school. This will help alleviate any hurt feelings.

  5. LUNCH PROGRAM • Three menu choices: one hot entrée, garden salad, or chicken wrap (M,W,F)/bagel (T,TH) • Students will not pay with cash during lunch. There is a basket in the office to collect money. • Students have ID cards that we keep at school.

  6. Math Programs We will be using a combination of two math programs: Investigations and ScottForesman. Using a combined approach helps to meet the needs of all learners.

  7. INVESTIGATIONS PROGRAMInquiry Approach Investigations is a complete K-5 mathematics curriculum. It is designed to help all children understand the fundamental ideas of number and operations, geometry, data, measurement, and early algebra. • Components of this program are: • 4 units are being used at each grade level • Activity-based program focusing on conceptual understanding • Teacher as facilitator • Student-centered to encourage creative thinking • Students develop and articulate their own problem-solving strategies • Students participate in engaging games that reinforce their understanding of important mathematical concepts and skills

  8. SCOTT FORESMANDirect Instruction • Scott Foresman helps students develop conceptual understanding and skills through step-by-step instruction. Components of this program are: * Traditional text focusing on procedural understanding * Teacher-centered * Learn, Check, Think About It, Practice Learning Cycle * Problem solving, technology, and manipulatives integrated into lessons

The Mixed Up ChameleonVocabulary/Spelling • Story Vocabulary Words – a list is sent home prior to each story to practice • High Frequency Words – Included in the spelling list • Every Monday, the students are given a spelling pretest. If your child spells all of the words correctly, he/she is to practice spelling the vocabulary words as a challenge. • The spelling test consists of spelling words and dictated sentences. The dictated sentences are made up of high frequency words, former spelling words, and words with familiar patterns.

  18. Handwriting • All letters must be relearned in slant print. Slant print prepares children for cursive writing. Printing must be done two spaces high. Assessment includes: letter form, size, spacing, control, smoothness, alignment, and slant. • Daily writing must reflect students’ abilities. • Cursive writing will begin when students are ready
