  1. Irony & Ambiguity(pg 284-285) Do NOT turn in DO NOW till end of class– you will need it again

  2. Irony • The difference between what is expected and what happens • 3 Types of Irony

  3. 3 Types of Irony 1.) verbal irony • simplest form • say one thing but mean another • example- (saying sarcastically) Thanks a lot, I’m thrilled to be here…

  4. 2.) situational irony • an event that is unexpected & contrary to what is expected • surprise endings • example– When the mayor is caught stealing money from the community fund

  5. 3.) dramatic irony • When we know what will happen before the characters • example—Joan plans a surprise party for Jim. Jim has a terrible day at work, and just wants to come home at relax that night…

  6. Ambiguity • offers us several conflicting consequences or meanings– and we need to figure it out. • example– Megan is a lovely girl, but is so irresponsible…

  7. PRACTICE! In play form write a small scene that displays at least TWO examples of irony… PLAY FORMAT: Lee: blah blah blah Troy: blah blah blah Lee: (sarcastically) blah blah blah
