The Significance of the Resurrection. • Without the Resurrection all claims about who Jesus is and what he did are hollow and empty. • Confirms revealed truths • Jesus IS the Son of God • All teachings of Jesus are true • Opens the way to new life • Principle and source of our own resurrection • Doorway to a new and eternal life • Destroys death, death is not the end

Ascension • Jesus appeared for a period of “40” days • Taught the apostles how to interpret scripture relative to his life, death and resurrection • Directed them to continue his mission • Descent into Hell • Complete loss of physical life • Went to realm of the dead who awaited his judgment • Brought salvation to the righteous souls • Established his power over heaven, earth and hell • Ascension into Heaven • Left to be with his Father in Heaven • Opens the doors of Heaven for us

The Significance of the Ascension • Celebrated 40 days after Easter • Reveals God’s Glory Incarnation: God comes to earth and assumes a human nature Ascension: returns to heaven where his full glory is revealed • Implications: Jesus has full authority over Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory All humanity has the possibility of spending eternity with God in heaven By leaving earth and “time” Jesus can be more present to us “I am with you always” “I will send my spirit” Eucharist Liturgy Scripture Ordained ministers
