Comprehensive Biospecimen Collection in The National Children’s Study for Chemical Exposure Analysis

The National Children’s Study focuses on a vast biospecimen collection from mothers, fathers, and children to assess chemical exposures and potential impacts on health outcomes. Mother samples include blood, urine, hair, nails, saliva, vaginal swabs, and breast milk. Father samples encompass blood, urine, hair, nails, and saliva. Child samples consist of placenta, cord blood, meconium, and various biological specimens. Chemical exposures are categorized by domains, including allergens, metals, air pollutants, and more. Data collection methods involve environmental observation and questionnaires to ensure comprehensive assessment.

  2. The National Children’s Study • Chemical Exposures classified by “Domain of Exposure,” sub-classified by “Specific Measure” • Allergens (pets, dust, mold) • Carbonyls (formaldehyde, acrolein) • Metals (Pb, Hg, Cd, Mn, Uranium, As) • Gaseous Air Pollutants (ozone, SO2) • Pesticides (carbamates, pyrethroids, atrazine) • VOCs (benzene, chloroform) • ETS • Nitrates • Halogenated Phenols, & more

  3. The National Children’s Study Chemical Exposure Measures divided into • Household & Community samples • Related Data Collection • Biological (blood, hair, nails, urine, breast milk) • Questionnaires • Observation (home, yard, neighborhood, agricultural area)
