  1. UiT and UNN as a resource in global health • Composition and establishment of health services • Teaching • Research Centre for International Health

Faculty of Medicine • Experience from establishing a faculty of medicine comprising of departments of pharmacy, odontology, clinical medicine, medical biology and community medicine. • Centres playing a potentially important role in global health research: • The National Research Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM) • The Centre for International Health (SIH) is a common initiative with the University Hospital North Norway (UNN) with the main objectives to coordinate international activities and to develop international competencies within these two institutions. • Tromsø Mine Victim Resource Center Centre for International Health

  3. Tromsø University College • There exists a close collaboration between UNN, UiTø and HiTø on training of ergotherapists, radiographers, nurses, health visitors, midwifes, bioengineers, physiotherapists and dental hygienists. Centre for International Health

  4. Multi disciplinary research • Experience from multi disciplinary research, e.g. collaboration between UiTø, UNN and the Norwegian College of Fishery Science; MARIBO. Centre for International Health

  5. Organ based teaching • Organ based teaching in medicine and our new and exciting concept in odontology are sought after competencies in several third world countries. • We are engaged at the Eastern University, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, after a request from the university.   6. The Tromsø Study • Now in it’s fifth version this represents a substantial resource as a model in future global research. Centre for International Health

  7. Centre for Peace Studies • An important resource to develop sustainable projects in the third world. Centre for International Health

  8. SOS/STD/STI/HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases • Department of Microbiology and Virology, UiTø, and Department of Microbiology, UNN, share the following interests and targets: • Resistance surveillance (National centre of competence: NORM (surveillance of resistance bacteria and viruses)) • Resistance mechanisms ((National centre of competence: detection and characterization of resistance microbes) • The departments have worked on mechanisms of antibacterial and antiviral peptides. • Competencies in bacterial and viral resistance could be a contribution to global health research in SOS/STD/STI/HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases.
