Settlement Size • You get settlements of different sizes, from the very large to the very small. • A hierarchy is a way of organising things in a certain order, the most important thing is at the top of a hierarchy. • A settlement hierarchy orders settlement by either: population size, number of services, distance apart.

  3. What is a settlement hierarchy? A settlement hierarchy is the arrangement of settlements in an order of importance. Can you guess the order?

  6. Conurbations • A conurbation is a very large urban area where several towns and cities have joined together. • Can you think of any examples of conurbations? • E.g. As Edinburgh has grown, it has joined with Portobello, Leith
