Methodology • A link to complete an electronic survey was sent out to the MIT Sloan student body. • The survey was open from April 2 – 15, 2008. • Two reminder emails went out on • April 8 • April 15 • A total of 376 surveys were filled out during the fielding period (236 completed and 140 partial).
Green Business Movement • 93% of students agree that the green business movement provides an opportunity to create new jobs, services, and products. % Agree n = 297
Guidelines on Green / Sustainable Business • Three out of four agree that clearer guidelines should be implemented. % Agree n = 283
Factors on Determining if a Company is Green • About 60% strongly agree that the company’s own practices determine if the company is green / sustainable. % Agree n = 271
Most Important Factor on Determining if a Company is Green • The most important factor for students is the company’s business practice. % % % % n = 267
Environmental Responsibility in the Bottom Line • The percent of students doubles in agreement that a company will need to build responsibility into its bottom line to be successful. Today Future % Agree n = 257
Employment • The majority of students have secured a job or are currently employed. n = 251
I am still in the process of my job search • Over a quarter of students agree that they have researched the environmental records of company’s that they are interested in working for. % Agree n = 70; low sample size, interpret with caution
I have secured a job offer • Close to 60% of students that have secured a job agree that a company’s environmental record and/or it’s commitment to sustainable business practices did not factor into his/her decision about the position. % Agree n = 139
I am currently employed at or affiliated with a company • 72% of students that are currently employed agree that they would like to learn more about the company’s sustainable business practices. % Agree n = 38; low sample size, interpret with caution
Plan to Launch Own Business • Half of the students that responded said that he/she plan to launch their own business. Q10. n= 247, Q19. n = 240
Envisioned Business • Of those that plan to launch their own business, most believe that they will maintain a healthy bottom line while minimizing impact on the environment and plan to start their business with sustainable business practices in place. % Agree n = 124
Household Products • 45% strongly agree that he/she prefer to purchase environmentally friendly products. % Agree n = 242
Gauging Environmental Friendliness • The top three ways that students gauge whether or not the product is environmentally friendly are by recyclable contents, product labeling, and reputation of the company that makes it. % % % % n = 241
Recycling • The majority of students never bring their own bags to the supermarket. n = 241
Commuting • Nearly half of students commute to campus via public transportation. n = 241
Paying More • 3 in 4 students are willing to pay more if a product contains all natural ingredients. % Yes n = 240
Switching Brands • Over 50% of students have switched brands in the last six months for a product that contains all natural ingredients. % Yes n = 240
Graduation Pledge • 73% of students are unaware of what the MIT Sloan Graduation Pledge is. n = 240
Student Status • Nearly half of the students that completed the survey were first-year MBA /LFM/ SDM students. n = 240
