  1. WORKSHOP 9NONLINEAR MATERIAL

  2. Workshop Objectives • To create nonlinear material property. • To run a nonlinear (Solution 400) analysis • Problem Description • Open an existing simxpert file : contact_nonlinear • Create a stress-strain table to fill in nonlinear material property • Create nonlinear material property. • Perform a nonlinear contact analysis • Evaluate results • Software Version • MSC SimXpert R3 • Files Required • contact_nonlinear.SimXpert • steel_stress-strain_curve.xls

  3. Suggested Exercise Steps • Enter the SimXpert Structures Workspace. • Specify SI-mm units • Open existing Simxpert file contact_nonlinear.SimXpert • Detach all results files. • Create a stress-strain table using data from steel_stress-strain_curve.xls • Add an Elasto Plastic constitutive model to the current material • Update the element property to include nonlinear material data. • Set up and run a General Nonlinear Analysis including strain as an output request. • Attach the results file. • Create fringe plots of nonlinear stresses and strains.

  4. Step 1. Enter the SimXpert Structures Workspace Open the SimXpert Structures Workspace • Click on Structures a

  5. Step 2. Set the Units b c Specify SI-mm units • Select Tools > Options • Highlight Units Manager • Click on Standard Units. • Scroll down and select the line with units mm, t, s. • Click OK. a d e

  6. Step 3. Open an Existing SimXpert File a Open a SimXpert file • Select File > Open • Navigate to and select contact_nonlinear.SimXpert • Click Open b c

  7. Step 4. Detach Existing Results Files Detach Results Files • Select File > Detach Results • Click on each file and click Apply. • Respond Yes to the prompt asking if you want to detach the files. • When window is empty, click OK. a b c d

  8. Step 5. Create a Stress-strain Table Create a stress-strain table. • Under the Materials and Properties tab, select Tables > StructPhysical > Stress-Strain from the Element Properties group. • Open steel_stress-strain_curve.xls in MicroSoft Excel. • Highlight the numeric cells of the spreadsheet, right-click and select Copy. • Right-click below the X Values column heading of the SimXpert Stress-Strain table and select PasteTable. • Alternatively, enter strain and stress values manually in the table. • Enter stress_strain for Table name • Click OK. c a e d f

  9. Step 6. Modify the Existing Material a Add an Elasto Plastic constitutive model to the current material. • Double-click the steel material in the model browser. • Click Advanced. • Click AddConstitutiveModel. • Select Elasto Plastic • Select Stress-Strain Data forNonlinear Data Input . • Click in the Stress-Strain Data text box • Select the stress_strain table in the Model Browser. • Click OK. b d c g e f h

  10. Step 7. Update Element Properties e Update element properties for nonlinear material analysis. • Double-click on the SOLID_1 property in the Model browser. • Click Advanced >>. • Check the Non Linear tab. • Click in the Material text box under the Non Linear tab. • Select steel from the model browser. • Click OK. a b c d f

  11. Step 8. Set Up Nonlinear Analysis Modify the nonlinear job name. • Right-click the contact_nonlinear job and select Properties. • Change Job Name and the Solver Input File name to contact_nonlinear_elastoplastic. • Click OK. a b b c

  12. Step 8. Set Up Nonlinear Analysis(Cont.) Set Up Nonlinear Analysis. • Right-click Output Requests and select :Create Element Strain Output Request • Click OK. a b

  13. Step 8. Set Up Nonlinear Analysis (Cont.) Run Analysis • Right click on contact_nonlinear_elastoplastic and select Run. a

  14. Step 9. Attach the Results b e After confirming a successful completion of the analysis in the f06 file, attach the .xdb file. • Select File >AttachResults. • Click the Folder icon for FilePath. • Navigate to and select the file contact_nonlinear_elastoplastic.xdb • Click Open. • Select Results as the Attach Option. • Click OK. a f c d

  15. Step 10. Results – Fringe Plot a Create a Fringe Plot of Stresses. • Under the Results tab, select Fringe. • Select Results Case contact_nonlinear_elastoplastic. • Select Results Type NonlinearStresses,StressTensor. • Select Derivation von Mises. • Click Update to generate a Fringe Plot showing the nonlinear stresses. c d e b

  16. Step 10. Results - Fringe Plot (Cont.) b a Generate a Fringe Plot of Plastic Strain • Change Result type to NonlinearStrains, Plastic Strain. • Click Update
