  2. Who is Jacob Kounin? • Classroom management theorist • His goal was to integrate instruction and discipline in the classroom • Most known for his two studies in the 1970’s • Main focus was preventative discipline

  4. Preventative Discipline • Kounin believed that successful classroom management relied on teachers ability to organize and plan their lessons while using proactive behavior and high student involvement. HOW?

  5. 5 Strategies – Lesson Movement • Withitness • Overlapping • Momentum • Smoothness • Group Focus

  6. Withitness • Eyes in the back of your head • Acknowledging misbehavior before it escalates • Being aware • It’s important for the students to think you know what is going on, even if you don’t

  7. Overlapping • Teachers ability to handle two situations at one time

  8. Momentum • Ability to keep the lesson moving swiftly and on track. • “Rolling with the punches”

  9. Smoothness • Also keeping the lesson on track by avoiding • Tangents • Dangles • Irrelevant information or incidents • “flip flops”

  10. Group Focus • Encourage Accountability • Checklists • Task cards • Create suspense & interest in lesson

  11. Conclusion • Children can misbehave despite what strategies are used • Most effective if applied in the beginning of the school year • Especially important for first year teachers
