  1. The ABORIGINES

  2. For the Aborigenes 2 It is not Enough to be BLACK!! They have to meet three criteria: • Have Aboriginal ancestors. • - Consider themselves as Aborigenes first.- And be recognized by the Aboriginal community

  3. English colonizers • They were almost exterminated by the English colonizers. Today , they represent only 1% of the Australian population , roughly estimated at around 200, 000 people when they have been present on the island for at least 25,000 years. At that time , Australia was probably connected with Papua-New Guinea, and had many more rivers and forest in contrast to the desert that it is today.

  4. Australian Aborigines • In 1965, They was little more than 40,000 people. They were literally massacred by the colonizers and expelled , especially from productive land. They were pushed to the north of the country, where temperatures reach 50 degree Celsius in very wet or extremely dry areas.

  5. RELIGION The Aborigines are extremely spiritual people . They believe the land is sacred and a spirit lives in rock, tress. They are animist. Spirits of huge creatures, such as the «Rainbow Serpent» would have created Australia, its landscapes and all the life! This is what they call the «  Dream Time » and what they represent in their paintings. Their culture is one of, if not, the oldest on earth.

  6. Aboriginal Painting of the Dream Time

  7. THE CULTURE Most instruments and artifacts were made from wood, rock or bones. The boomerang itself was primarily a toy used to entertain the villagers, only later being used as a hunting and war device. Their typical music instrument is the didgeridoo.

  8. BEING AN ABORIGINE TODAY ! The Aborigines who continue to live in the rural areas of Australia -- or the outback -- have tried to keep as much of their tradition and history alive as they can. They’re trying to regain the land they lost in the past. They sell paintings and artifacts to the tourists.Their art is world famous. They have their own flag. Black: Represents the Aboriginal people of Australia Red: Represents the red earth, the red ochre and a spiritual relation to the land Yellow: Represents the Sun, the giver of life and protector.
