  1. Ozone By:HannahWilmers, RoshniGhosh, Emily Finkelstein

  2. Description • Ozone is found at ground level and in the upper regions of the atmosphere.  • Ground level ozone is created by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) • Ozone harms sensitive vegetation, including trees and plants during the growing season • Programs are aimed at reducing pollution by reformulating fuels and consumer/commercial products, such as paints and chemical solvents that contain VOC • Chemical formula: O3

  3. Source • Emissions from industrial facilities and electric utilities, motor vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapors, and chemical solvents

  4. Human Health Effects • Ground level ozone harms our health • Children are at greatest risk from exposure to ozone because their lungs are still developing and they are more likely to be active outdoors when ozone levels are high, which increases their exposure • Makes it more difficult to breathe deeply and vigorously, cause shortness of breath and pain when taking a deep breath, coughing and sore or scratchy throat, inflame and damage the airways, aggravate lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, Increase the frequency of asthma attacks, make the lungs more susceptible to infection, and continue to damage the lungs even when the symptoms have disappeared. • Ozone exposure may increase the risk of premature death from heart or lung disease

  5. Air Quality Standard • 0.075 ppm • Annual fourth-highest daily maximum • Averaged over 3 years

  6. Graphics / Trends • Variations in weather conditions play an important role in determining ozone levels • Ozone is more readily formed on warm, sunny days when the air is stagnant • Ozone production is more limited when it is cloudy, cool, rainy, and windy
