"The Teacher I Want To Be" by Brian Merry explores teaching as akin to constructing a house - teaching fundamental life skills, guiding students to understand the real world, and adapting instructional styles to fit each student. The metaphor delves into the importance of life skills, structure, organization, and subject mastery. Though differences exist, the analogy illustrates the supportive nature of teaching.

Teaching is like a House By Brian Merry
The Teacher I Want To Be • I want to be a teacher who is both demanding but also supportive of my students. I want to build a foundation from which the students will grow and future success will occur. • Teach fundamental life skills that aren’t often taught • Show that the real world isn’t anything like they think it is. • The fundamental skills are represented by the foundation of the house. And the support I would give is represented by the shelter and home feeling of a house.
Expanding on the Metaphor • Foundation=Life Skills • Walls and Ceilings=Structure and Organization • Furniture Inside=Varying the style to fit each student • The furniture can be moved and changed to fit a different feeling, just like a teachers style should change to accommodate each student. • Rooms=Different subjects that should be mastered
Breakdown • The metaphor works for the most part, however there are some key differences: • Houses can be built relatively quickly, while it could take a lifetime for a teacher to master teaching, and have each student successful • Houses usually stand alone, which means the only thing that supports it is itself. Teachers usually have support from a lot of other areas like their family and friends, and each other.
