Challenges of Spelling

English spelling can be particularly challenging due to several factors. It utilizes more sounds than there are letters in the alphabet and has been significantly influenced by languages like Latin, Greek, German, and French. Only about 50% of English words are phonetically spelled; the rest involve rules and exceptions that must be memorized. To improve spelling skills, it’s essential to grasp spelling rules, recognize syllable patterns, practice difficult words, study homophones, and use dictionaries effectively. Engaging in regular reading and writing also enhances spelling proficiency.

  2. Why is English spelling so challenging? • There are not enough letters in our alphabet. We use more sounds than just the ones represented by the alphabet letters. • English is a language that has been influenced by other languages such as Latin, Greek, German, and French. • Some spelling does not follow the “rules”.

  3. What do you need to know to be able to spell words? • phonology- how words sound • sight- how words look in print • morphemes- how words are made from meaningful elements • etymology- word origins

  4. What about the “rules”? • 50% of English words are spelled the way they sound • 37% follow spelling rules • 13% need to be memorized

  5. What can YOU do to be a better speller? • Understand the spelling rules and exceptions. • Understand syllable patterns. • Identify words that you personally have a hard time spelling and focus on learning those words. • Study homophones. • Understand how to use a dictionary. • Read and write often.

  6. Why is spelling something we study in7th grade? The TEKS for spelling in 7th grade are: • 7.14D Students will edit drafts for grammar, mechanics, and spelling. • 7.21Students are expected to spell correctly, including using various resources to determine and check correct spellings. Effective writers must try to spell words correctly using strategies and resources.
