  3. Purpose of Church Church's weren’t only used for religious practice. Colonial families came early to church to do business. Only place to socialize, advertise and celebrate in colonies People came to read adds, important town meeting dates, cattle sales and marriages. Many colonial families would come to church to talk about tobacco and livestock prices and other cash crops.

  4. Events during and after church. In the south families would take strolls around the church after church. Sermons in northeastern colonies lasted two to three hours and prayer were a little shorter. In southern colonies the church’s read the Anglican Book of Common Prayer and the prayers were so long that the sermon was only twenty minutes. In New England after church many families would go to the “ Sabba- day house there meals would be served , adults socialized and children read sermons.

  5. Religious rituals Many colonial families read the Bible from front to back Religious rituals were extremely important. Sunday was a very religious day in colonial times. . You couldn’t skip church and do fun activities like fishing or dancing. If boys didn’t behave on Sunday they could be confined in a cage at New York City Hall Park . Sabbath day is a day prayer no work .
