  3. Geography Australia is one of the largest countries in the world. One third of it is a desert. The largest range is the great dividing range, IT IS over 2,000 miles long. Australia’s nickname is the ‘land down under’. Capital City: Canberra Population: over 20 million Language: English Currency: Australian Dollar

People and Culture • When Europeans arrived in Australia they banished the Aborigines from their land. • The current government have accepted that it was a wrong act and have apologised to the aborigines. • Australians love animals. • They Spend A lot of time on the beach. • They are very creative.

  5. NATURE Australia has over 500 national parks to protect their plants and animals. Uluru is the world’s second largest monolith. Australia has several types of rainforests. Australia has many rich plants and animals in the northeast of the country. The Great Barrier Reef has many species of fish and you can swim with them. Australia has 516 national parks to protect there plants and animals. The biggest rock in the world is called Uluru. Australia has several types of rainforests.   6. History Aborigines arrived over 40,000 years ago. The first Dutch explorers landed in 1606. In 1851 gold discovered. In 1788 the British settled in Australia.

Government and Economy The Commonwealth of Australia is a democracy (leaders are elected by the adult population) but it recognizes the monarch of Great Britain as sovereign (the Queen of England has the title "Chief of State" and performs ceremonial duties). The head of state is the British monarch. The queen is the chief of the state. In 1999 the Australians decided to remain a part of the Commonwealth. Australia is an exporter of wool, wheat, beef, fruit and wine.
