Marx believed all of human society would following a common path: • Prehistory • Feudalism • Capitalism • Worker Revolution/ Dictatorship of the Proletariat • Communism
1. Prehistory Before farming cavemen, hunters/gatherers Commodities: dead animals Means of production: sticks, stones, spears Nobody owns the MoP Nobody can exploit each other.
2. Feudalism Capitalist: Nobleman (owns the land) Worker: ordinary farmers MoP: farmland Day 1: grows food to feed (sustain) themselves Day 2-6: grows food for nobleman to sell for $ Nobleman keeps most $, gives some to the king.
4. Revolution • Workers (proletariat) realize they are being exploited, band together, and overthrow their bosses. • They take control of the MoP. • Ex: factory workers taking over factory • Ex: NFL players taking over the team/stadium. • “Dictatorship of the proletariat”
5. Communism • Public ownership of property (MoP) • “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”
Example/Situation The CEO of a taxi cab company in Massachusetts lobbies against the legalization of gay marriage, although many of his taxi cab employees happen to be gay. He states that he is by no means ethically, morally, or religious opposed to gay marriages. The Massachusetts Senate, hoping to make families spend more time with each other, recently passed a bill limiting the # of hours a week a married man/woman can work to 50. 1. Who are the capitalists/workers? 2. What is the means of production? 3. What stage of history? 4. How would Marx explain the situation?
