  1. Unit 1 Basic concepts • Syllables A syllable is a unit of speech sounds consisting of a vowel or a vowel with one or more than one consonant. A word has as many syllables as there are vowels in it. e.g. ease (1) easy (2) uneasy (3)

  2. 音节(Syllables): 音节是包含一个元音 或一个元音跟别的辅音结合而成的发音 单位。在英语中元音特别响亮, 一个元音 可以构成一个音节, 如：I ;open 一个元 和一个或几个元音或辅音音素也可以构 一个音节, 如：go, bed, lamp, stand。一般 来说,元音可以构成音节, 辅音不响亮, 不能 构成音节。

  3. Syllable construction and division • In the majority of cases, however, a syllable consists of one vowel flanked, by one or more than one consonant. And occasionally a syllable is formed without a vowel. In that case, one of the so-called liquids/l/,/n/,/m/, / ŋ/ act as a vowel substitute. The commonest positions these vowel-likes occupy are the ones immediately preceded by plosive/stop or fricative consonants, or in one of the final -al,-el, -an, -en, -on, etc.when the sound /ə/in those endings is left out. For example: peo-ple lo-cal han-dle strug-gle See Exercise Page 3, 4

  4. Stress • In any word of more than one syllable there is at least one syllable more forcibly(强有力)uttered. This is called stress. (word stress) • Stress has 3 principal degrees: 1. Primary stress---the strongest one in the word and indicated by a high vertical stoke ‘ placed before the syllable bearing that stress. 2. Secondary stress---the intermidiate one shown by a low stroke , just before the syllable. 3. Weak stress---the syllable not stressed at all are left unmarked. Eg. /prə,nʌnsi’eiʃən/ /ə/

  5. Difference between stressed&unstressed syllables Stressed syllables: • are long • have a pitch change • have full vowel sounds Unstressed syllables: • are short • often have a reduced vowel sound See Page 8 exercise---speaking

  6. Rhythm • Regular, repeated pattern of sounds or movements in speech, dancing, music, etc.

  7. Homework • Review the three basic concepts syllable, stress, rhythem • Finish the listening & speaking exercise • Imitation exercise(Conversations)
