  12. TA Advise and Approaches Grading • Establish a rubric to use and stick to it • When first grading, grade a couple and see what it is like---the review and change • Be fair but firm. • You are the authority on grading, you handle disputes.

  13. TA Advise and Approaches Office Hours • Plan to give 1 hour a week for students to discuss work • Be mindful of use. If students are not attending, consider changing time. • Establish a plan on how to provide help. * Avoid holding hands. Make them do the work * Be patient * Be creative (come up with ways to explain material or have them come to insights)

RA expectations  ½-time RA balances role with TA  Full-time RA is paid a stipend to allow full-time focus on research  Full time employment in US = 40 hr/wk  High-quality work requires going beyond minimum (60+ hr/wk)  Own your research – ask questions  Being an engineering scientist requires extensive reading

Distribution of Effort (Example breakdown)  First two semesters: • 25% TA duties (10 hr / wk) • 25% RA duties (10 hr / wk min) – usually coincides with dissertation research • 50% classes and additional research time  Third semester • 50% RA (20 hr / wk min) • 50% classes and additional research time  All else: 50% RA = 100% research

Academic Requirements Graduate School Minimum GPA Requirements • Academic Probation: The completion of 12 hours with GPA < 3.0 • Dismissal: Completion of 2nd semester with GPA < 3.0 Transfer of credits and course work waivers (graduate level work) from other universities Program guidelines for independent study (CME 790/MSE 781) • Description of topic • Goals • Criteria for evaluation (grading)

  30. Waiver or Transfer? Credits can be transferred from U.S. institutions if M.S. not completed If M.S. completed, DGS can request a waiver of some of residency credits • Complete 12-24 credits @ UK first • Have advisor send e-mail requesting waiver to DGS with UK GPA, degree and prior institution(s) • Advisory committee ultimately decides if coursework is enough for Ph.D. study

  34. Grad Student Placement – CME Faculty Research Presentations Week Week of the 15th Deadline for making Advisor Sections: Oct 2nd • You will be expected to name 3 choices • You will have to have meet (One on one) with the three you choose. Placement will be finalized by Oct 14th.

  35. Safety Safety Training (on-line) • Anyone who works with chemicals in a laboratory must complete the following three online classes: Chemical Hygiene Plan/Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Waste, and Fire Extinguisher Use. • CoE training may substitute – please ask • Provide documentation to your research advisor and lab supervisor(s) • http://ehs.uky.edu/classes.html

Responsible conduct of Research To conduct research, must complete training Two components to training • Online CITI training (as described in email attachment) • RCR Seminar • Small groups discussions on case studies • Writing assignment related to case studies Must complete all 10 components to register for classes Spring 2017

Stipend and Engineering Fee 2015-2016 Stipend: $24,000 (Ph.D.pre-qualifying) $25,000 (Ph.D. post-qualifying) Engineering Fee: $57.60 per credit hour for College of Engineering courses Full-time enrollment (first three semesters): $691.2 per term + 20% add on (re: taxes) (~ $829.44/term) You must pay this; we add to salary over course of semester(s) University Fees: Health Fee (≈ $175/semester) Recreation Fee (≈ $74/semester). OIA Fees ($50 in Fall)

  38. What to pay…  You will receive base stipend + reimbursement for engineering fees  Engineering fees will be dispersed across payroll each semester - $829.44/9.5 pay period = $87.31 additional per pay period.  Stipend will return to base level thereafter Department / University pays tuition and graduate student health insurance. You pay engineering fee, health fee, recreation fee and OIA fees.

  39. Example Bill (Fall 2011) You pay: Health Fee $175 Johnson Ctr Fee $68 Engineering Fees = $52/credit OIA Fees $50 Example: 1 3-credit 600-level class + 2 3-credit 500-level classes = $52*9 = $468 + $50 + $175 + $68 = $761

Academic Integrity and Professionalism Policies Coursework leading to CME / MSE degree • Electives at the discretion of your advisor • Advisor must be aware of your electives Plagiarism • Never use any material without attribution (including photographs and figures!) • Includes organization and ideas, not just words • When in doubt, talk to instructor or your advisor Faculty expect professional conduct • Maintain regular hours in lab and communicate • You are employed by grants – ask about side projects
